GDCP Clinical Training Sites

Practica & Internships



First Year

First semester: practice clinical skills with on each other in a supervised setting in which plenty of feedback is provided. Second semester: two practice clients (typically undergraduate students in psychology classes) simulate psychotherapy (10 sessions) with supervision.

Second Year

Practicum I: typically in a community mental health facility or group practice, sometimes in inpatient hospital setting or jail. Encourage students to see a broad range of clients.

Third Year

Practicum II: specific populations are stressed, e.g., in-patient setting, state hospitals, child/adolescent clients. Focus on variety or depth and breadth. Students receive supervision both here and on-site; both group and individual supervision is provided.

Fourth Year

Preinternship: Goals are similar to those for the third year. In addition, students apply to internship sites and begin supervising first- and second-year students.

Fifth Year

Internship: takes place at APA- and APPIC-approved sites, such as VA hospitals, prison, military hospitals, hospitals, community mental health, and university counseling centers.
