What is the OPI?

"The OPI is a global assessment procedure [that] measures language production holistically by determining patterns of strengths and weaknesses, establishing a speaker's level of consistent functional ability as well as the clear upper limitations of that ability" (ACTFL OPI Tester Training Manual, Page 2).

Proficiency is based upon speaking ability and is evaluated through a "10-30 minute, tape-recorded conversation between a trained interviewer and the person whose speaking proficiency is being assessed" (Page 3). Proficiency will be categorized into one of four categories: Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Superior.

Professor Deborah Berhó, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Spanish at George Fox University, is one of only three Oregon professors to be fully certified by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) as an Oral Proficiency Interviewer for Spanish.

Who participates in the OPI?

Most students entering George Fox University desiring to take Spanish classes, those returning from study abroad, and graduating Spanish majors will participate in a one-on-one, tape-recorded conversation with Professor Berho.

Based upon ACTFL guidelines and proficiency ratings, the student will receive a proficiency level as stated in "What is the OPI?". This level of proficiency rating will provide the student with a detailed explanation of his/her speaking and oral comprehension skills.
