IN MEMORIAM

The Rev. Dr. Paul Bock, a member of our Advisory Editorial Board died unexpectedly on April 4, 1993, at the age of 71. He was educated at Heidelberg College in Ohio, Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Yale University Divinity School in New Haven, Connecticut, Jan Hus Theological School in Prague, and finally at Western Reserve State University in Cleveland. Paul was ordained in the United Church of Christ and served as pastor, campus minister, and professor of religion at Oregon State College, Bowling Green University, Heidelberg College, and lastly at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. In addition to many articles, including several in this publication, Dr. Bock wrote two books, In Search of a Responsible World Society: The Social Teachings of the World Council of Churches (Westminster, 1975) and Signs of the Kingdom: A Ragaz Reader (Eerdmans, 1985).

Dr. Bock's interest and membership in Christians Associated for Relationships in Eastern Europe and subsequent close cooperation with the Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe stem from his experience of studying and pastoring in Prague in the fateful years of 1948 and 1949. It was there that he had met his wife Eva Chybaova. His interest centered on Czechoslovakia which he visited on several occasions but he also maintained a much broader interest in all of the countries of Eastern Europe which made him a valuable contributor to this publication. Always ready to help he provided valuable advice on potential authors, publications, and developments in Czechoslovakia. He is survived by his widow and two children as well as grandchildren.

It is with sadness that we reflect on the loss of his presence and it is with gratitude that we remember the gifts of his concern and devotion.
