Africa
African Studies Program
Program Overview
In cooperation with Go ED. Africa, a ministry of Food for the Hungry International, the African Studies Program offers students a unique blend of academic work and hands-on experience. While it is based in Kampala, Uganda, students also will have the opportunity to study and engage in field experience in Rwanda and Ethiopia.
Course Content
Students take courses in African traditional culture and religion and development economics, plus their choice of an additional course focusing on peace-building, environment, Ethiopian history, introductory Swahili, or African literature. Together with these courses, students will also choose from several field experience options to earn a total of 16 credits.
Service Opportunity/internship
The African Studies Program provides students with a variety of service opportunities in conjunction with Food for the Hungry. Students will choose from among several four-week practica options in one of these countries: Uganda, Rwanda, and Ethiopia. They will benefit from the expertise of on-site Food for the Hungry staff and will typically earn four credits.
Application Process for George Fox students
Students are to fill out the off-campus semester program application, as for all other George Fox-approved programs. If approved by the university's screening committee, students may then apply to the African Studies Program. Applications may be filled out on line at: www.go-ed.net.
Application Process for "visiting students" from other universities
As a partner institution with Go ED. Africa in this program, George Fox is authorized to process students from other colleges and universities who wish to participate in the program. Students should seek approval from the study-abroad coordinator at their home institution to participate in the program and should determine with that coordinator the cost of the program. The coordinator in turn will contact the George Fox study-abroad coordinator to determine the cost. Once approved by the home institution to participate in the Go ED. program, students should proceed to fill out the Go ED. Africa application process online (www.go-ed.net) and indicate their intention to apply through George Fox.
Upon successful completion of the program, Go ED. officials will notify the George Fox study-abroad coordinator of the student's academic performance and George Fox will then issue a transcript for the academic credit. The credits can then be transferred to the home institution.
Eligibility
Students should be full-time upperclassmen with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Those enrolling through George Fox from other institutions will need to meet the eligibility standards of their home institution.
Credits
Because students remain enrolled in their home institutions while participating in the program, 16 hours of academic credit is awarded by the student's home institution.
Housing
Go ED. Africa will provide lodging and food at each of the locations.
Costs
The student pays George Fox's standard tuition, room and board and student fees and continues to receive financial aid, including scholarships since they are officially George Fox students. The student will only need to cover the cost of textbooks and other educational materials, miscellaneous expenses, and travel to the U.S. departure city (Phoenix).
