The African Studies Program

Program Overview
The African Studies program at Daystar University in Nairobi, Kenya, is operated through the Christian College Consortium. Students from George Fox can join those from other Consortium schools and over 1,300 Africans from more than 20 African countries to study at the only accredited evangelical Christian liberal arts college in all of Black, English-speaking Africa. At Daystar, where one of its strengths is its indigenous nature as an African university, you will have the privilege of being immersed in African culture.

Course Content

Programs of study include communications, business, education, community development, and Bible and Christian ministries, as well as courses in the history, culture, literature, politics, art, music, and religions of Africa. All instruction is in the English language, offered by Christian faculty from several African, Asian and Western nations.

Opportunities

Daystar students will have the opportunity to tour Nairobi, visit wildlife centers and game reserves, reside for a time with a Kenyan family, see Christian ministries where the hope of the gospel is making a difference, and experience the culture, not simply by being there, but through developing friendships, working and studying with African brothers and sisters.

Application

The student must obtain and fill out two applications; a George Fox Off-Campus application and a Daystar application. These applications can be picked up from the director of overseas study or the registrar's office and are due in the registrar's office by January 17, 2005. DUE TO A US STATE DEPARTMENT WARNING THIS PROGRAM IS CURRENTLY SUSPENDED. (Note: Actual program deadlines will differ.)

Eligibility

Eligibility is generally limited to students in their junior or senior year. Preference will be given to students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students will be interviewed by a committee composed of George Fox faculty and students. This committee will then determine whether to recommend the applicant for Daystar University.

Credits

Because students remain enrolled in their home institutions while participating at Daystar, academic credit is awarded by the student's home institution. Recommended credits: 15-18 credits per semester.

Housing

Students are housed in dormitories on the new campus in the town of Athi River, about 25 miles south east of Nairobi.

Costs

The student pays George Fox's standard tuition and room and board rates and continues to receive financial aid, including scholarships since they are officially George Fox students. Costs covered include travel to and from Nairobi (round trip from Portland), your tuition, room, and board expenses , administrative fees, and required excursion fees. The student will need to cover the cost of textbooks and other educational materials, miscellaneous expenses and personal travel while in Africa.
