Juniors Abroad 2002

GED 375A Budapest to Berlin - John Bowman, Doug Campbell is a Humanities tour focusing on five major cultural and political centers of Europe: Budapest, Hungary; Vienna, Austria; Krakow, Poland; Prague, Czech Republic; and Berlin, Germany. You will pursue background study of significant artistic, historical, political, economic, and religious events that have contributed to the greatness of these significant cultural centers. This will provide opportunities to acquire an expanded global perspective and a deeper understanding of your own culture, values and beliefs. We will visit major religious centers, cathedrals, castles, palaces, historical monuments, political centers, and museums of history and art.
We will also engage in relaxed as well as intense experiences including taking a Danube River Cruise, visiting the holocaust sites of Theresienstadt in the Czech Republic and Auschwitz in Poland, attending music events (folk, jazz, and classical), and relaxed independent meandering through fascinating outdoor craft markets. Pre-travel preparation will include group sessions, explorations on the WEB, library research, class discussions and focused student sharing.
GED 375B England and Scotland - Caitlin Corning, Mark Terry
This trip will focus on Scottish and English history from the prehistory to the modern period. Students will be visiting historical sites (castles, monasteries, battlefields, Roman forts), archeological digs, have the opportunity to hold medieval manuscripts and see a Shakespearian play at the restored Globe theatre. There will be time explore London, Edinburgh (including St. Andrews), York, Bath and Stratford-upon Avon, among others. The purpose of the trip is to give students a better understanding of Scottish and English history and culture, especially the similarities and differences between the two nations.
GED 375C Greece - Tim Tschonhantaridis, Manfred Tschan
The trip to Greece will focus on the Pauline travels from Philippi to Corinth. Along the way we will visit archeological sites such as Dion and Vergina; religious sites such as Meteora and Delphi; as well as prominent New Testament sites such as Corinth, Athens and Thessalonians. Our academic focus will cover the theological, archeological, and Hellenistic influences of both Classical and Modern Greece.
GED 375D Madrid to London - Mark Weinert, Clella Jaffe
This trip takes students up the western edge of Europe, offering visits to the great cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, and London, as well as the English university city of Oxford, the lovely Belgian city of Bruges, and the southern French town of Avignon. In addition to spending time in the rich cultural histories of Spain, France, Belgium, and England, the trip offers a special opportunity to look at the Christian heritage as it has developed in these cultures. Special experiences include visits to the Prado in Madrid, the medieval papal palace in Avignon, the church of Notre Dame, the Louvre, and other great museums in Paris, and the West End theaters and museums of London.
GED 375E New Zealand - Beth LaForce, Michele Johnson
This trip will focus on intercultural communication between the Pakeha (white) and Maori (native) cultures, on the country's educational system and on the growing free-market economy as reflected in growing revenues made in New Zealand tourism . Participants will explore the marketing behind the tourist trade, visit educational settings and meet educational experts, and experience Maori cultural centers. The tour will also include major points of natural, historic, economic and cultural interest: Milford Sound, the thermal reserves at Rotorua, the federal government buildings at Wellington, the Wartime museum in Auckland, historic Christchurch, and the gold mining community of Queenstown. During the stay on the South Island, students will have the opportunity to participate in outdoor tourist activities.
GED 375F Peru and Bolivia - Ron Stansell, Carlisle Chambers
The group will tour teeming metropolitan areas like Lima, Peru; LaPaz, Bolivia, and Santa Cruz, Bolivia. There will be high mountains, steaming jungle, arid highlands and rustic rural villages. Lima is a city of over 6 million. The La Paz International airport (Bolivia) is located at 13,400 feet elevation, over 2,000 feet higher than the top of Mt. Hood. In contrast, Santa Cruz is a tropical lowland city of over 800,000 people. Highlights of the tour include the Lost City of the Incas at Macchu Picchu, Peru, and the Spanish colonial mining centers of Sucre and Potosi, Bolivia. There will be opportunities for worship and service projects to mix with local Christians and to build relationships.
GED 375G Rome to London - Mel Schroeder, David Church
This European Humanities Study Tour will highlight the history, art and culture of Medieval and Renaissance Europe, with glimpses of ancient and early-Christian Rome, as well as sites and landmarks related to the World Wars. Our tour will encounter many of the key sites and works that are central to our Western Culture. Countries visited include Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice), Austria (Vienna, Salzburg), Germany (Bavaria, Dachau), France (Paris, Normandy), and England (London).
GED 375H Western Europe - June - Steve Grant
This trip will highlight the art, history and architecture of Medieval and Renaissance Europe by beginning with Ancient and modern Rome. The influences of early Church history and its effect on art, and impact of the World Wars I and II on Europe will be a major focus. Significant museum and architectural sites will be visited. In addition to Rome and London, many other cities/sites to be experienced on the tour will include Florence, Venice, Vienna, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Munich, Dachau, Paris, and the beaches at Normandy. There will also be opportunities to visit the theatre in London, as well as utilize unique tours and side trips of the student's own choosing. This trip will leave the first part of June. Spring athletes have first priority.
