GEED 375A Vienna to Berlin - John Bowman, Roger Newell Participants will enjoy comfortable touring by train to five major cultural centers of central Europe: Vienna, Austria (day trip to Salzburg); Budapest, Hungary; Krakow, Poland; Prague, Czech Republic; and Berlin, Germany. We will do appropriate pretravel preparation and (through firsthand structured and unstructured encounters in Europe) take advantage of opportunities to acquire an expanded global perspective and a deeper understanding of our own culture, values, and beliefs. We will visit castles, palaces, museums, historical monuments, political centers, the famous Krakow salt mines, and the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. We will also discover great natural beauties , quaint European villages, impressive transportation systems (trams, subways, trains, Danube River cruise), and very technologically advanced architectural achievements (particularly in Berlin).
GEED 375B Vietnam, South Korea, and China - Brent Wilson, Terrie Boehr The Asia 2003 trip offers four distinct cultures that are as diverse as they are distant from each other. We will visit South Korea (Seoul), China (Hong Kong and Beijing), and Vietnam (Hanoi). We will have the opportunity to visit amazing places of significant historical importance such as the DMZ between North and South Korea, Tiananmen Square in Beijing, The Great Wall of China, Hong Kong harbor, and even Hoa Lo Prison ("Hanoi Hilton") in Hanoi where American pilots, including John McCain, were held during the Vietnam War. We will also have the opportunity to visit and observe several eastern religious services at a variety of Buddhist temples. The languages of all four cultures are very different from each other. We will have the opportunity to study each language prior to our arrival so that each student has a survival vocabulary within each country. Come learn four languages, travel over 17,000 miles, and tour Asia.
GEED 375C Germany, France, England - Mark Weinert, Colleen Richmond This trip will visit the three great nations of the northern Europe, offering a chance to experience great cities and smaller regional towns. In France, we will spend several days in Paris, giving opportunity to visit such sites as Notre Dame cathedral, the Louvre, and the Eiffel Tower. In Germany, we will visit the great Rhine River city of Cologne, with its magnificent cathedral, and small towns along the river in an area where castles are abundant. In England, in addition to London, with its great museums, sites of government, and West End theater, we will visit the historic town of Canterbury and the university city of Oxford. Students will have opportunity to read from the literature of these areas, with special attention to the works of C.S. Lewis, the Oxford Christian writer.
GEED 375D Australia - Paul Chamberlain, Jim Foster This trip focuses on science and culture. Australia is home to many unique animal species and offers diverse ecosystems, including the Great Barrier Reef and moderate and tropical climates. Students will have opportunities to explore ecosystems such as natural eucalyptus forests, tropical rainforests, pineapple and banana plantations, and marine habitats. Of particular interest will be visits to such sites as the Whitsunday Islands, the Great Barrier Reef (the largest coral reef in the world), Featherdale Wildlife Park (the home of numerous koalas, kangaroos, wallabys, wombats and tasmanian devils), Fleay's Flora and Fauna Park (the only place in the world to have bred a duckbill platypus), the Dantree rainforest, the Atherton Tablelands, the Sydney Botanical Gardens, and the Australian Natural History Museum.
GEED 375E Central America - Viki Defferding, Louise Newswanger Emphasizing pre-Columbian and modern culture, this trip is designed for students from a variety of majors who are adventurous and want to develop a deeper understanding of our neighbors to the south. The study tour will be one of great contrasts from ancient pyramids and ceremonial centers to lush jungle areas with a myriad of tropical flora and fauna to warm beaches and coastal reefs. Students will have opportunities to learn about the ancient cultures of these areas and be able to participate in many outdoor activities, including snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming, and hiking. Participants will also visit various religious institutions, worship with local believers, and experience unique cultural adaptations of the Christian Faith. The trip will visit the Yucatán peninsula in Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and Costa Rica.
GEED 375F Ireland, Wales, and Scotland - Michele Johnson, Tom Johnson
Celtic Heritage Trip. Visit major historical and spiritual sites in Ireland, Wales, and Scotland, including a stay on the Isle of Iona. We will hear three Celtic languages (Irish, Welsh, and Gaelic), as they are being preserved and spoken today in the British Isles. Trip includes the Dingle Peninsula, Dublin, Conwy and Caernarvon Castles, Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Loch Ness, and many other wonderful places. Reading, research presentation, and a journal required.
GEED 375G France and Italy - David Church, Mark Terry A Symphony of Art. The title is due to the fact that the leaders are artists and
musicians. The itinerary includes large and small cultural centers of Italy and France (from Rome to Paris) to take a close look at the people and artists of these countries. Students will compare and contrast how things have changed and yet stayed the same over the centuries since these artists' great works were created. We will visit museums, birthplaces, concert halls, churches, and cities where the cultural history of these countries is demonstrated.
GEED 375H Western Europe - Steve Grant, Dirk Barram This trip will highlight the art, history, and architecture of medieval and Renaissance Europe by beginning with ancient and modern Rome. The influences of early church history and its effect on art, and the impact of the World Wars I and II on Europe will be a major focus. Students will visit significant museum and architectural sites as the itinerary sweeps through Western Europe. The trip will include visits to Rome, London, Florence, Venice, Vienna, Salzburg, Hallstatt, Munich, Dachau, Paris, and the beaches at Normandy. There will also be opportunities to visit theaters in London, as well as to utilize unique tours and side trips of the students' own choosing at various times during our travels.
GEED 375I Greece and Italy - Alex Pia, Tim Tsohantaridis The purpose of the trip is to enhance the participants' understanding and appreciation of the richness found in the history, arts, land, and people of Italy and Greece. Students will have an extended stay in Italy and will visit its internationally known cities of Rome, Venice, and Florence, as well as have time to relax in the resort town of Sorrento, which is near the ruins of Pompeii. The study tour will include sites such as the glorious ruins of the Colosseum, the Catacombs, and Pompeii as well as the magnificent architecture of the Vatican and the Trevi Fountain, along with the breathtaking art of the masters: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. In Greece, students will visit northern and southern sites, with an emphasis on biblical history and Greek civilization in the North, and the Apostle Paul's journey in the South. An exploration of the Apostle Paul's thought and theology will occur as we pass through southern Greece. The journey from Greece to Italy will be by boat. Students will experience both Greek and Italian language lessons in order to enrich their experience with Greek and Italian cultures more fully.
