In conjunction with the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities, George Fox students can participate in the Latin American Studies Program (LASP). Based in San Jose, Costa Rica, the Latin American Studies Program allows students to experience cross-cultural living, to deepen their understanding of the Lordship of Christ in an international context, and to explore the economic, political, social and cultural realities of North America's relationship with its Latin neighbors.
The program is not recommended for George Fox majors and minors in Spanish.
Course Content
For the first six weeks, students attend intensive daily language classes at the Instituto de Lengua Espanola. In the weeks following, interdisciplinary seminar classes explore Latin America's history, politics, economics, religion, culture, and ecology. Four specialized concentrations are available to LASP students: International Business: Management and Marketing in the fall semester; Environmental Science and Sustainable Development in the spring semester; Advanced Language and Literature; and Latin American Studies (to meet the needs of Spanish majors).
Service Opportunity/Internships
LASP students not participating in a concentration spend two weeks of the semester in a service opportunity or internship in Costa Rica to get hands-on experience working in a developing country. Opportunities are available in a variety of areas, such as education, development, health, agriculture, and environmental stewardship.
Application Deadlines
The student must fill out two applications: a George Fox off-campus application form (available from the registrar's office) and a Latin America Studies Program application (to be completed online at https://bestsemester.com/applications/students). An application fee must accompany your application.
Eligibility
Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and a minimum of one year of college Spanish or the equivalent.
Housing
Students are housed with Costa Rican Christian families chosen by the LASP.
Costs
The student pays George Fox's standard tuition and room and board rates and continues to receive financial aid. Costs typically cover travel from the point of departure from the U.S., and room and board expenses. The student will need to cover the cost of textbooks and other educational materials, travel to and from the point of departure from the U.S., miscellaneous expenses, and personal travel while in Costa Rica.
