What is the student to professor ratio?
The student to professor ratio at George Fox is 11:1. The average class size runs from 20 to 25 students.
Are there international travel opportunities available through George Fox?
George Fox offers a wide range of opportunities for
study abroad. We currently have exchange programs available for our students to study in China, Costa Rica, Egypt, England, Spain, Kenya, and Russia, as well as exchanges with sister schools around the United States. Additionally, our students who have been at George Fox for three or more years have the opportunity to travel abroad for nearly a month through our
Juniors Abroad program, with all transportation costs paid for by the University. Juniors Abroad trips in the past have gone to Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Greece, Kenya, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, and Tanzania.
How many George Fox students study internationally?

Applying & Acceptance
When should I apply to George Fox University?
George Fox has a
Priority Application Date of February 1. In order to be eligible for the maximum amount of financial aid students need to apply on or before February 1 of the year preceding their planned enrollment at George Fox. Our top academic scholarship is worth $15,000. Those applying after February 1 will see a decrease in the amount of financial aid that is available to them. It pays to apply early!
How long does it take before I will be notified of my acceptance?
It typically takes one of our admission counselors less than two weeks to evaluate a completed application file. It may take longer during our busiest months of December, January, and February.
Is an application fee required, and if so, how much?
The application fee for George Fox University is $40.
What do I have to turn in to complete my application file to George Fox?
In addition to the application and $40 application fee, high school seniors must submit official high school transcripts, SAT or ACT test scores, a personal statement, and completed academic and personal recommendation forms. Transfer students must submit the application and application fee of $40, official college transcripts from each college attended (also high school transcripts and SAT or ACT scores if you have been out of high school one year or less), personal statement, and recommendation forms.
Does George Fox University require a minimum SAT/ACT for admission?
The average incoming freshman at George Fox scored a combined 1090 for the Critical Reading and Math sections on the SAT or a composite score of 23 on the ACT. We do not have a minimum requirement policy on the SAT and ACT exams. However, we are looking for students to earn a combined Critical Reading and Math score of 880 on the SAT, or a composite score of 19 on the ACT.
Are interviews, references or essays required for admission?
While an interview is not required, we do enjoy meeting each applicant personally. We require both academic and personal recommendations. We also ask you to write a personal statement describing your interests, achievements, goals and experiences - particularly your spiritual journey and philosophy of life - as another way for us to get to know you better!
Do you require a specific high school curriculum?
To be best prepared for college-level work, you should have four years of English and at least two years of social studies, science, math, and foreign language.
Will George Fox accept the General Education Diploma (GED)?
Students may be admitted on the basis of the General Education Development Test, provided the average standard score is at least 530 with no one score below 480.
Does George Fox offer an early admission program?
An early admission program is available to qualified high school students, allowing them to study at George Fox University while completing high school. Applicants must have completed the sophomore year - but not their senior year - of high school and must receive grades of C or better to remain in the program. Early-admission students may take a maximum of 12 semester hours (not more than one course per semester) with a tuition charge of $50 per credit hour, and there is a one time application fee of $40. What are the academic requirements for transfer students?
Transfer students must have earned a minimum college grade point average of 2.6 to be admitted.
Is admission open for freshmen and transfers at any semester?
Students may apply and enroll for our Fall and Spring semesters.
Does George Fox offer remedial or development studies?
A limited number of carefully selected students who don't meet regular admissions standards are welcomed into the university's Academic Success Program (ASP) each fall. Admitted with probational stuatus to George Fox, ASP students receive individualized orientation and registration. Total credit hours are limited, and tutorial assistance and other aids are available as needed.
Will George Fox honor either the SAT or ACT?
The University accepts either the SAT or ACT as entrance examinations.
Does George Fox accept the Common Application?
Yes! We are a member school of the
Common Application. If you submit the Common Application to us, we will require you to sign and submit our
Honor Statement as a suplemental piece to the Common Application.
Athletics
What division does George Fox compete in?
George Fox is a member of the NCAA, Division III. We compete against Lewis & Clark, Linfield, Pacifc, Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman, Whitworth, and Willamette.
What varsity sports do you offer?
We offer the following varsity sports programs:
- For men: soccer, cross country, basketball, track and field, tennis, and baseball.
- For women: soccer, volleyball, golf, cross country, basketball, track and field, tennis, and softball.
What are your school mascot and colors?
Our mascot is the George Fox Bruin. Our colors are navy blue and old gold.
Do you have any intramural sports?
The intramurals program is designed to give students an opportunity to enhance their education by providing them with the opportunity to exercise, build friendships, and compete with one another in a spirit of fun. A wide variety of programs are designed for coed and same-sex competitions. Offerings include the following:

Christian Commitment
Are all of your professors Christians?
Yes! Each member of the staff, faculty, and administration are Christians - without exception! To be employed by the university, each individual must sign the university's statement of faith and sign a lifestyle agreement, similar to the lifestyle agreement our students sign.
What denomination is George Fox affiliated with?
George Fox is affiliated with the Evangelical Friends Church, modern-day Quakers. We are closely connected to the
Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends. However, George Fox welcomes students from all denominations to be a part of our community. We currently have more than 50 different denominations represented among our student body. Approximately 10 percent of our students come from a Quaker heritage.
What is the spiritual atmosphere like on campus?
Spiritual development is extremely important to us at George Fox. The integration of faith and learning is the cornerstone of our community. You will find an open environment in which you will be allowed to explore your faith and ask some tough questions. We worship as a community twice a week through organized chapels. There are also opportunities to worship through other organized activities such as Greenroom and Over the Edge. Many of our students also participate in small-group Bible studies. George Fox is a place where your faith can grow and flourish.
What's a Quaker?
Quakers, also known as Friends, are a Christ-centered denomination begun in England in 1652. George Fox was the original Friend who rediscovered the biblical truth that God is immediately present to every individual, without the need for intermediaries or special actions. Friends have continued to preach and live this truth, often providing a voice for social justice and peacemaking to the church universal. While there are some groups of Friends who have moved away from biblical truth, the branch sponsoring GFU remains true to Quakers' roots in Scripture.
Am I required to be a Christian to attend George Fox?
You do not have to be a Christian to be admitted to George Fox, all we ask is that you sign our community lifestyle agreement, and that you are open to faith and how Christian principles can affect your life.
Costs & Finances
Is an application fee required, and if so, how much?
The application fee for George Fox University is $40.
How much does a year at George Fox cost?

What kinds of scholarships are available?
We have a host of scholarships available to students at George Fox. Upon acceptance to the University you may qualify for an
academic award. Freshman awards range from $6,000 to up to $15,000 per year based on your high school GPA and SAT/ACT test scores. Transfer awards range from $4,000 to up to $6,000 per year based on your cumulative college GPA. All domestic students are encouraged to apply for need-based financial aid by using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (
FAFSA).
How much is the average financial aid package?
Our average financial aid package for the 2005-2006 freshman class was between $17,000 and $17,500. This average usually includes gift aid, work-study, and some loans.
How many students get financial aid?
95 percent of our students receive some combination of financial aid. More than 80 percent of our students receive academic scholarships as a part of their aid package.
Do I have to pay a tuition deposit before enrolling?
Yes. Students must pay a $300 tuition deposit to reserve their space in campus residence and to allow them the opportunity to register for classes. The deposit goes directly toward your student account. The full amount is refundable if we receive a written request prior to May 1. Students can pay their tuition deposit at anytime after they have been admitted to the university.
Do you offer athletics scholarships?
No. As a member of the NCAA, Division III, George Fox is prohibited from offering athletics scholarships.

How many students attend George Fox?
Currently George Fox has a total enrollment of just over 3,100 students. Of that number, about 1,500 are enrolled in our traditional undergraduate program.
What is there to do on campus?
Campus life at George Fox is extremely active. It is very easy to get involved. Our student activities committee puts together one or two major activities per week. These could include movie nights, coffeehouses, concerts, or theme dances. Events are always fun and usually free. We also have a host of ways to get involved in Christian ministries. Students can participate in urban ministries, mission trips, and the Little Bruin program, just to name a few. George Fox also provides students with a choice of more than a dozen intramural sports. If you combine these activities with class work, homework, and socializing, you will have a very full college life.

Where is Newberg?
Newberg is located in the Chehalem Valley just 23 miles southwest of Portland on Highway 99. It will take you only an hour and 15 minutes to get to the coast and an hour and a half to get to Mount Hood.
Can I come and visit the campus?
Absolutely! We love having students
visit us. You can come to campus for a day or overnight. We offer tours twice a day Monday through Friday, opportunities for you to sit in on classes, time to sit down and visit with one of our admissions counselors, and student contacts for any questions you may have. Additionally, twice each year we host a
Bruin Preview, during which you can stay overnight in one of our residence halls, visit classes, enjoy some entertainment provided by the university, and meet other students who are interested in George Fox.

Housing
What type of housing is available on campus?
George Fox has a variety of
housing options for our students. Most of our new students are housed in residence halls, while returning students typically opt for one of our suites, campus houses, or campus apartments.
Will I get to choose my housing?
Yes! When you pay your $300
tuition deposit, you will have the opportunity to select your top three choices of residence areas. The date we receive your tuition deposit determines the priority in which you are placed in housing. That means the earlier you pay your deposit, the better chance you have at getting your top choice of housing on campus!
Is there a freshman dorm?
No. All of our residence halls are open to all students. Each floor of a dorm will have an upperclassman resident assistant whose role it is to act as a peer and resource to the floor residents.
Do you have coed dorms?
No. We do have residence halls that share a common lobby between all-male and all-female wings.
Are there times when friends can visit members of the opposite sex in their dorm room?
Yes! Our open floor hours in the residence halls are 5-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 2-11 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Residence hall lobbies are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
