From The Alumni Director
A Commitment to Serve
By Robby Larson, Director of Alumni Relations

George Fox University has long been a community that seeks to serve others in both personal ways and through more structured opportunities like our annual Serve Day. It is one of the defining characteristics of this place. And, it's one of the many reasons I am proud to work here. What I think is most impressive is that this commitment to service doesn't end when students graduate. Many of our alumni have taken up the call to love and serve their neighbors. It happens all around world, in ways that impact thousands, and in ways that touch just a few. For many alumni, this desire to serve comes from their days as students. Today, George Fox continues to send our students (and staff) out to serve. Here are several examples of the amazing things that these folks are doing. More...

New Seminary Dean Named
Chuck Conniry, director of the doctoral programs at George Fox Evangelical Seminary since 1998, has been named vice president and dean of the seminary. Conniry arrived at the seminary 10 years ago to direct its doctor of ministry program, which includes two tracks: leadership in the emerging culture and leadership and spiritual formation. Conniry also teaches theology and pastoral studies courses at both the doctoral and master’s levels.  To find out more, click here.

Women’s Basketball Reaches Sweet 16
The George Fox women’s basketball team concluded its season with a 47-40 loss to top-ranked Hope College (Holland, Mich.) in the “Sweet 16” round of the NCAA Division III basketball tournament. The Bruins finished the 2008 campaign with a record of 25-5, establishing a school record for wins in a season while leading the nation defensively, allowing only 45.4 points per game.

Three Bruins received all-conference honors, with senior Katy Campbell recognized for the second consecutive year as Northwest Conference Player of the Year, senior Melissa Marek-Farris earning first-team honors, and senior Tiffany Behary earning honorable mention honors. Coach Scott Rueck was selected as Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year.

Now that the season has ended, the attention of the team turns to a overseas trip to build a community basketball court in Ghana, Africa. Read more about this trip in Robby's column above.

Events

Animal-Assisted Crisis Intervention Training
The George Fox Graduate Department of Counseling invites you to attend a one-day workshop entitled Animal-Assisted Crisis Intervention: Training Pets and Their Human Handlers. The workshop, which is a part of the department's ongoing Trauma Response Training program, will take place on April 5 at the Portland Center and will feature representatives of HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response.

Over the past 13 years, the Graduate Department of Counseling at George Fox University has been committed to providing training in traumatology and trauma response. Under the direction of Anna Berardi, PhD, the trauma response programs are an outgrowth of our commitment to providing comprehensive services in support of the resiliency of individuals and communities in the aftermath of a traumatic event.

Highlighting Our History
Since the redesign of eBruin last summer, each issue has included a column about some aspect of the heritage of George Fox University. Most of the time, these topics are generated from random conversations with alumni, other times they have been random stories that I have come across in my role as director of Alumni Relations.

In response to the last eBruin, I received an e-mail from an alumnus of Western Evangelical Seminary, the predecessor of what is now George Fox Evangelical Seminary, requesting that I “highlight” the seminary portion of our history. I plan to oblige this request, with next month’s column focused squarely on the history of our incredible seminary.

But this request got me thinking: “What other parts of our history would our alumni like to hear about?” So, I propose this question to you, our alumni. Please let me know what you would like to see covered: events, eras, professors, etc. Depending on the level of response, I am not sure that we can delve into each suggestion. However, I think it might be fun to get your ideas. Please send your thoughts to alumni@georgefox.edu

Thanks for your commitment to George Fox University and your willingness to keep our proud heritage alive!

Spread the Word!
