From The Alumni Director
Five Reasons to Come Home
By Robby Larson, Director of Alumni Relations
I distinctly remember an instance as a college freshman when I almost made my mom cry. After spending a weekend at my parents’ house, the house I had grown up in, I told my parents that my truck was loaded and I was headed home. In that moment, I didn’t realize the significance of my word choice, but my parents did. When my mom said, “But, this is your home,” I quickly figured it out. After only a few months on campus, my residence hall, my community of friends, and my college life had become my home. I am sure that many of you had a similar experience during your undergraduate experience. With Homecoming right around the corner (February 8-9), I want to help you reflect on this place that became your home - and give you a few reasons why you should take this opportunity to come home again. View From the Alumni Board
Full Circle
By Keith Merritt ‘74, Alumni Board Immediate Past-President
"We must not cease from exploration. And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we began and to know the place for the first time ever." T.S. Eliot

This quote certainly is an appropriate description of the 38 years I have been affiliated with George Fox College/University. My assumption is that in some individual, unique way, the idea Eliot conveys could be embraced by all of our alumni in regards to their own George Fox experience. More...

The Cost of Higher Education

Many of you may wonder why higher education costs so much. President Robin Baker recently tackled that hot topic in a campus discussion. He said he could have given a lengthy explanation about the labor-intensive nature of education, the absence of government support for private Christian higher education, the rising expectations of students, and the increasing costs of health care, technology, and salaries. Instead, here are three points he wanted to make for prospective students:
-Most undergraduate students don't pay sticker price.
About 95 percent of our traditional undergraduates receive financial aid. We are committed to making a George Fox education affordable to every qualified student. In fact, we awarded $30 million in financial aid to students in 2006-07. Prospective students should apply and find out the true cost before making a college decision.
-A college education is an important financial and personal investment.
On average, the income of a college graduate is 60 percent higher than of a high school graduate. That can mean $1 million more in lifetime income for a college graduate. Postgraduate programs can translate into even higher returns. But the educational experience at George Fox University provides more than future financial incentives. Even more importantly:
-We are helping students understand what it means to follow Christ.
We have something special here. Our students benefit from the high quality of education they receive from our faculty and staff, people who are both highly qualified and who care about our students' well-being. Our students receive an education that goes beyond the subject matter. We intentionally integrate our Christian faith into our courses and our relationships. Our students receive an education that empowers them to discover their "calling" in Christ. We are primarily concerned with developing students who will seek to follow Jesus and bring the Kingdom values to a world that desperately needs them.

If you know a prospective student who could benefit from a George Fox University education, please let us know by completing the Recruit-a-Bruin form (read more in Announcements section below).
Here's another way that you can help. Last year, alumni like you gave more than $320,000 to George Fox University, helping make college more affordable for future generations of students and increasing the quality of a George Fox education. Thank you for your generosity. Your financial support and student referrals are vital to our ability to make George Fox one of the nation's premier Christian universities. Highlighting Our History
As most faithful eBruin readers know, this publication has undergone a number of changes since its inception. The masthead and layout have been revamped again and again, with the most recent change taking place with this past September's issue. The special features have also changed over the years: from the "Laugh Out Loud" section, links to somewhat random and quirky websites including "Find the best pizza in your neighborhood," and strange news briefs from around the world, to the relatively new inclusion of this "Highlighting our History" section.

And yet, with all of the changes, looks, and editors (Robby Larson is the fifth), the core of this publication has remained the same. In fact, when the eBruin was created in 2000 by then assistant director of alumni and parent relations, Scott Box ('99), the following text was included:

"The intent of this brief monthly e-newsletter is three-fold: First, to offer up-to-date and timely information about George Fox University and its alumni. Second, to continue facilitating the real sense of 'family' found at this institution -- beyond the campuses in Newberg, Portland, and Boise. And finally, to give 'online alumni' a continuing point of connection to George Fox University as technology advances."

This edition, January 2008, is our 50th issue of eBruin. From notes we have received from various alumni living all over the United States and around the globe, this publication continues to provide George Fox alumni with quality articles about what is going on at George Fox University and how our alumni can stay connected with the "family" that still exists at their alma mater. Thank you for subscribing to eBruin, for reading it (whether that's just a glance or every word), for providing feedback and ideas, and for staying connected to George Fox. You are the reason that this publication exists and continues to be a valuable resource to our alumni.
