Lessons from a New
House
By Robby Larson, Director
of Alumni Relations
|
Last
month I bought my first house right here
in Newberg. It is a rather small,
nondescript house that is a good fit for
me. Before I purchased the house, it
received a fresh coat of paint, new
flooring throughout, and the kitchen was
completely redone. Then I moved in.

There
are many events in our lives that cause
us to “get
involved.” Look at how Race
for the Cure has grown over the years as
thousands of citizens run to raise money
for cancer research. Remember when the
Jerry Lewis Telethon began? This
fund-raiser has been incredibly
successful in raising money to help kids
with cerebral palsy. The list of
nonprofit organizations and other
volunteer groups that attempt to make
life better for others is now extensive.
Why do we do these things?

|
I am the
admission recruiter for George Fox
Evangelical Seminary and I have the best
job at the university.
I have the privilege to meet prospective
students from across the nation and
around the world, at the very moment they
seek to answer God’s call to
professional preparation for ministry.
What a joy! Each story is unique, but it
is the same Holy Spirit guiding them as
guided you to George Fox in years past.

Announcements

Auxiliary
Bazaar
During Family Weekend, the George Fox
University Auxiliary offers a wonderful
holiday bazaar to raise money for
student scholarships. If you would like
to donate handcrafts or artwork to the
bazaar, or sell on consignment, contact
Danya Ochsner, director of special

Hosting International
Students
George Fox is privileged to have about
50 undergraduate international students
enrolled this year. Twenty of the new
students are from the People’s
Republic of China.
As you can imagine, there are many
challenges to attending school in a
foreign country. One of the challenges
our students face is the closure of
on-campus housing during vacation
breaks, and many have few options
during the breaks. With Christmas
quickly approaching, we are looking for
people who may be interested in having
one or two international students stay
with them for all or a portion of the
Christmas break. The dates of Christmas
break are Dec. 15-Jan. 6. Would you
prayerfully consider having an
international student stay in your home
for a period of time during Christmas
break?
If you would like to share your home
and your lives with international
students during Christmas or would like
more information, contact Alex Pia,
director of international student
services, at apia@georgefox.edu
or assistant director Dianna McIntyre
at dmcintyre@georgefox.edu.

Prepay
Your Child’s College
Tuition George Fox
University participates in the
Independent 529 Plan, which enables
families to save for private higher
education. The idea is simple:
Independent 529 Plan allows you to prepay
college tuition now. Over time, the value
of your investment grows as tuition
rises. When your child enrolls at a
participating college, you redeem your
prepaid tuition. The percent you buy
today is honored tomorrow despite tuition
price increases, allowing you to avoid
years of tuition inflation. To find out
more, click

Highlighting
Our History

In 1969,
the inaugural George Fox raft race was
held on the Willamette River. This
student tradition continued for a
number of years, with the race course
covering the three miles from
Roger’s Landing in Newberg to
Champoeg Park. Each crew of students or
staff had to construct their own raft,
with the key criteria being
“anything that floats.” The
primary stipulation for the rafts was
that they had to be human
powered.
Although
the event was a great source of fun for
students, it was also something that
was taken very seriously. In 1970, U.S.
Senator and George Fox Trustee Mark
Hatfield manned the starter’s
pistol to begin the race. Each year,
the fastest times were recorded. To
this day, the fastest time on record is
65 minutes, set in 1971.
As the
tradition grew, the rafts and the
sailors grew more creative. In 1976,
several students chose to enter a
waterbed, inflated with air, as their
raft. Later, in 1981, the event peaked
with 22 raft entries and more than 100
student sailors participating.
Eventually the event was discontinued.
However, this fall a group of students,
including members of ASC student
government and the Bruin Heritage
Society, have started discussing the
possibility of bringing the tradition
back.
Did you
participate in, or watch, the raft
race? Do you have a special memory of
this event? Please share it with
us at bruinheritage@georgefox.edu.
