From The Alumni
Director
Giving Thanks for
Wonderful
Alumni
By Robby Larson, Director
of Alumni Relations
|
Autumn is upon us. The trees have
lost all but a few straggling leaves.
There is a slight nip in the air. And,
the campus is nearly deserted, as
students and staff have started leaving
for the Thanksgiving break. It is a
beautiful time to be here in Newberg. It
is also a perfect time to reflect on the
many things that we have to be thankful
for. In reality, we should always strive
to maintain a spirit of thanksgiving for
the rich blessings God has given us. But
often times in the midst of life’s
chaos we fail to sustain this appropriate
response to God’s hand.

Living To Our
Values
By Rick Brumble (SPS '01,
MBA '05)
|
As a
non-traditional student, I gained much
empirical education prior to completing
my formal education. As a member of the
US military, I matured enough to begin
thinking about values and their
importance in determining my actions. My
first taste of setting ethical standards
and living by them came from an incident
involving General Ronald R. Fogleman, Air
Force Chief of Staff.

Alumni Sing in
Chapel On Wednesday, Nov. 7, the stage
of Bauman Auditorium was filled with more
than 40 George Fox alumni. They were
there as a part of the inaugural Bruin
Heritage Week to reintroduce a long-lost
piece of George Fox history: the official
college song, Close Beside
Chehalem’s Mountain. The group
represented every decade from the 1920s
through the 1980s. After finishing the
song, students in the audience erupted in
a standing ovation. The words of the song
were then projected onto the screen,
allowing the students and the alumni to
sing the song together. The event was
covered by both The
Oregonian and the Newberg
Graphic. You can read the stories
here:

International Students
As you can imagine, there are many
challenges to attending school in a
foreign country. One of the challenges
our students face is the closure of
on-campus housing during vacation breaks,
and many have few options during the
breaks. With Christmas quickly
approaching, we are looking for people
who may be interested in having one or
two international students stay with them
for all or a portion of the Christmas
break. The dates of Christmas break are
Dec. 15-Jan. 6. Would you prayerfully
consider having an international student
stay in your home for a period of time
during Christmas break?
If you would like to share your home and
your lives with international students
during Christmas or would like more
information, contact Alex Pia, director
of international student services, at
apia@georgefox.edu,
or assistant director Dianna McIntyre at
dmcintyre@georgefox.edu.

Highlighting
Our History
In 1904, Pacific
College (the name of George Fox
College until 1949) students J.
Ray Pemberton (class of 1906)
and Cecil J. Hoskins (class of
1907) penned the words to the
song Close Beside
Chehalem’s Mountain.
Accompanied by music written by
then music professor Clifford
W. Kantner, the song became the
official song of the young
college. For generations,
students proudly sang the song
during chapel services, after
basketball games, and at many
other campus events.
|
|
During the turbulent 1960s, the song
began to lose favor among students. The
tradition of singing the song after each
basketball game came to an end about the
same time that the Bruin mascot was made
official and new coach Lorin Miller took
over the men’s basketball program.
Shortly thereafter, freshmen were no
longer expected to learn it as a part of
their initiation – an expectation
that caused many new students to stay up
at night during their first week on
campus studying the words in case an
upperclassmen student asked them to sing
it.
The last time the song was sung on
campus, prior to Chapel during Bruin
Heritage Week, was at the Centennial
Celebration in 1991. Shortly after the
reintroduction of the song, professor
emeritus Dave Howard recorded the song to
play on the Centennial Tower's carillon.
The song can now be heard everyday at
4:03 p.m. echoing across the Newberg
campus.
Words to "Close Beside Chehalem's
Mountain" the official song of George Fox
University
Close beside Chehalem's mountain
Is the college we adore
Like an ever flowing fountain
She will stand forever more
Where she stands we'll ne'er forget
it,
Near the old Willamette's banks,
And in years we'll ne'er regret it
That we entered in her ranks.
Chorus:
'Tis the good old Quaker College,
And we'll shout her worthy name,
Where we gained our store of
knowledge,
In her halls of honor's fame.
And we'll always in this manner,
To our mother school be true.
'Neath the George Fox College
banner,
Of Old Gold and Navy Blue.
