A Day Without Tuition

Last week, Alumni Relations and Bruin Heritage Society (our student alumni association) sponsored Tuition Freedom Day. This brand new event was designed to educate students about the importance of philanthropic giving to George Fox University. It has been a joy to serve on the Alumni Board for the last four years. I was a student at George Fox “College” way back in the 1970s when there were fewer than 10,000 people in Newberg and only one traffic light. It’s been fun watching the city grow and also see the growth in George Fox “University.” How exciting to have added engineering and nursing majors (to name just a couple), degree-completion programs and numerous graduate programs. Philosophy at GFU

From 1954 to 1989, Arthur Roberts was philosophy at George Fox. He also taught church history, Bible and religion courses and served as department chair and dean. “On the side” Arthur published books of poetry, church history, theology and philosophy of science. Of course, George Fox College was much smaller then. But, as generations of students would testify, Dr. Roberts was an amazing and inspiring teacher. More...
Dirk Barram hired to lead School of Business
Dirk Barram, a 25-year employee of George Fox University, has been hired as dean of the university’s School of Business after serving in the role on an interim basis from 2006 to 2008 and for the first half of the 2010-11 academic year. Click here to read more.
George Fox Women’s Basketball earns a spot in conference title game
After surviving a brilliant first half of three-point shooting by the University of Puget Sound and their own struggles at the free throw line, the George Fox University Bruins edged the Loggers 62-56 Thursday night at the Wheeler Sports Center’s Miller Gym to reach the finals of the Northwest Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament. The title game is set for Saturday in Portland, Ore., at 7:00 p.m, where the Bruins will play against top-seeded Lewis and Clark College. The winner earns a spot in the national tournament, while the other must await a possible at-large bid. Click here to read the full story.
Homecoming Moves to the Fall
Save the dates October 7-9 as Homecoming returns to the Fall! You don’t want to miss the launch of this re-imagined George Fox tradition. This weekend of celebration will include the first-ever Homecoming Gala, an outdoor tailgate party, redesigned class reunions, and so much more! Class reunions will take place for the classes of 2001, 1991, 1986, 1981, 1971, and 1951, while affinity reunions will be head for all biology and chemistry alumni and everyone that participated in University Players. Central Oregon Fox Film Festival Special Screening – Tuesday, April 5 at 7 p.m.
Join us at the George Fox University Redmond Center for an evening of short student films! Combining the liberal arts emphasis of communication arts with hands-on experience in video, film, and digital media production, Cinema and Media Communications (CMCO) at George Fox is one of the fastest growing undergraduate majors. Hear about this vibrant program from professor Matt Meyer and watch student films that will inspire you in a special screening for alumni, parents and friends of George Fox. Blazers Game – Tuesday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m.
On April 12, watch the Blazers take on the Memphis Grizzlies in their final home game of the season. Join other alumni as well as current and future Bruins as we cheer the hometown team on to victory. The discounted group tickets are $20 each and there are a limited number of tickets available. Classic Bruin 50-year Reunion – April 29 & 30
Members of the George Fox class of 1961 are invited back to campus for their Classic Bruin Reunion, celebrating 50 years, on April 29-30. This event coincides with spring commencement, with the members of the class of 1961 leading the processional in the graduation ceremony. The event also features dinner on both Friday evening, a continental breakfast on Saturday, a campus tour, delicious lunch, and a lot of memories. Golf Tournament – July 14
Join fellow golfers for the annual George Fox golf tournament at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in Aloha, Ore. We are seeking sponsors and players for the tournament, which supports student scholarships and the Bruin Athletic Association. Many sponsorship levels are available. Open Board Positions
The Alumni Board is currently seeking applications or nominations for positions representing alumni from the pre-1970s, 2000s, and the MBA and PsyD programs. Service on the alumni board is a valuable way to give back to and stay connected with the George Fox community. If you are interested in applying for one of these positions, please fill out the alumni board application form online by March 31.
Spring Sports Pocket Schedules Available
Schedule cards for the George Fox University spring sports seasons are now available from the university’s athletics office. To obtain a card, stop by the George Fox department of athletics in the Wheeler Sports Center any time during business hours, call the athletics office at 503-554-2910, or e-mail sports information director Blair Cash at email@example.com.
