Writing Center Services
Any full- or part-time student is eligible to use the Writing Center's services. Students interested in meeting with a peer consultant should call 2327, email firstname.lastname@example.org, or stop by the Writing Center to schedule an appointment. The Writing Center is located in the Murdock Learning Resource Center. Appointments are generally forty minutes long, but can be lengthened to fit a student's needs. Drop-in help is available, but on a limited basis, and only when a peer consultant has no scheduled appointments.
The George Fox University Writing Center is not an editing lab, where students drop off papers to have grammar and spelling checked and fixed. Indeed, peer consultants have been advised against meeting with students who do not have time to make suggested revisions, and who only want their essays to be proofread. The Writing Center is a place where students can sit down with a trained peer consultant to discuss a piece of writing. Through that discussion, students will discover ways to improve particular texts, but also the means through which they might improve any text they write.
In sum, the Writing Center provides space for students to learn to write better by having peers help them write better, think better, edit better. The Writing Center is a recognized source of help in writing: a place where students can find instructive readers for drafts of assigned writing, as well as readily available guides for correcting the writing problems identified by professors, by peer consultants, or by the writers themselves.
Online resources are also available.
