1/17 - PUGET SOUND 91, GEORGE FOX 66: Loggers Bypass Bruins with Early 2nd-Half Explosion
NEWBERG, Ore. - Opening the second half with a 25-7 run, the visiting University of Puget Sound Loggers broke what had become a close game and went on to defeat the George Fox University Bruins 91-66 in a Northwest Conference men's basketball contest Friday night (Jan. 17) here at the Wheeler Sports Center.
Behind Paul Williams' 14 first-half points, Puget Sound scored the first six points of the game and eventually built up a 32-20 before the Bruins battled back. A 16-6 run, fueled by three-pointers from Aaron Schmick and Nate Tyler and a pair of treys by Trevor Person, brought the home team within two at 38-36 with 1:12 to play. Williams' three and two free throws by Aubrey Shelton enabled the Loggers to take a 43-38 lead into the half.
The second half was all Loggers as the visitors out-scored the Bruins 25-7 in the first 10 minutes of the half for a 68-47 lead. The Bruins got no closer than 15 after that. Puget Sound's largest lead came with 43 seconds left when Chase Curtiss hit a pair of free throws for a 91-64 advantage.
Tyler led George Fox with 17 points, while Schmick added 13, hitting 8-8 from the free throw line, Person scored 11, and John Macy had 10. Mark Gayman was the Bruins' top rebounder with 6, while Person passed out 6 assists.
Matt Glynn led all scorers with 18 points for Puget Sound, with Shelton adding 16 and Williams and Zach McVey 14 each. Chase and Shelton had 6 rebounds apiece as the Loggers dominated the smaller Bruins on the boards 41-25, including 14 offensive rebounds. Jermaine Perrien handed out 8 assists. The Loggers shot .516 for the game (32-62).
The Bruins fell to 5-8 overall and 0-5 in the conference with their 25th straight NWC setback. The Loggers climbed to 8-6 overall and in the league.
George Fox hosts Pacific Lutheran University and Puget Sound goes to Pacific University Saturday (Jan. 18), both games at 8:00 p.m. following women's games at 6:00 p.m.
