12/30 - WARNER PACIFIC 86, GEORGE FOX 85: Bruins' Win Streak Snapped in Nailbiter at Warner Pacific
PORTLAND, Ore. - In a cliffhanger that was not decided until the final second, the George Fox University Bruins saw their four-game winning streak, all on the road, come to an end with an 86-85 setback to the Warner Pacific College Knights in a non-conference men's basketball game here Monday night (Dec. 30).
The Bruins, who trailed at the half 47-45, went ahead 13 seconds into the second half on a three-pointer by Trevor Person, and gradually built that lead to 78-70 with 8:19 to play. But the Bruins then went cold, going scoreless for four-and-a-half minutes as the Knights climbed back into the game behind Matt Segrin, who had 20 of his game-high 25 points in the final half. Segrin's steal and dunk put Warner on top for the first time in the second half 79-78 with 4:26 left.
Mark Gayman finally broke the Bruins' scoring drought with a driving layup at 3:30 to regain the lead at 80-79, and the teams traded leads the rest of the way. A scoop shot by Bryan Wadlow gave George Fox its final lead at 85-84 with 43 seconds left, but Wesley Powers put Warner ahead 86-85 with an inside layup with 16 seconds to play. Wadlow's short jumper in the lane and a tip by Nate Tyler in the final seconds both failed to fall for the Bruins as the clock ran out. Gayman led the Bruins with 20 points and 7 rebounds, while Person and John Macy, who canned four threes, each had career highs of 14 points. Wadlow finished with 11. Person also had a career-high 9 assists and picked up 3 steals.
In addition to Segrin's 25, Demarcus Best and Nick Hudson had 18 each, Hudson with 16 in the first half, and Powers added 13. Segrin had a game-high 9 rebounds as the Knights edged the Bruins on the boards 32-31. Best had 8 assists and 3 steals.
The Bruins fell to 4-3 with the heartbreaking loss, while the Knights improved to 10-4.
George Fox remains on the road to open Northwest Conference play this coming weekend with its eastern Washington trip, going first to Whitman College in Walla Walla on Friday (Jan. 3). Game time is 8:00 p.m., following the women's game at 6:00 p.m.
