COMING UP:
With 4th place in the Northwest Conference secured (George Fox is three games behind 3rd-place Whitworth and three games ahead of 5th-place Lewis & Clark), the Bruins can enjoy the role of "spoiler". After visiting Pacific Lutheran Friday, the Bruins host Willamette Saturday in the season finale, and the Bearcats are locked in a three-way struggle with Puget Sound and Whitworth for 1st place in the league. The Willamette game also marks the 1,000th men's game to be witnessed by Mike "Biggs" Wirta, the Bruins' long-time basketball statistician.

COACH MARK SUNDQUIST
Mark Sundquist (Seattle Pacific '89), the 2004-05 Northwest Conference Coach of the Year, is 60-87 (.408) to date in his 6th season as a college head coach, all at George Fox. He picked up his 50th win on Dec. 6 when the Bruins rallied from 15 down to defeat Corban College 87-82. He coached the boys' programs at Woodburn (Ore.) High for two years and at Newberg (Ore.) * Szalay Named NWC "Player of the Week" for Feb. 6-12
Senior post Scott Szalay recorded back-to-back double-doubles in leading the Bruins toa 2-0 week, earning Northwest Conference "Player of the Week" honors for Feb. 6-12. In an 85-67 win over Linfield on Tuesday, he scored 24 points on 10-14 field goals and 4-6 free throws, with 10 rebounds, 4 steals, and 4 blocked shots. In a 71-62 win over Lewis & Clark on Friday, he has 19 points on 8-14 field goals and 3-5 free throws, with 13 rebounds, 2 steals, and 4 blocks. For the week, he scored 43 points (21.5) on 18-32 (.563) from the field and 7-11 (.636) from the line, with 23 rebounds (11.5), 6 steals (3.0), and 8 blocked shots (4.0). He is the NWC leader in both rebounding (8.7) and blocks (1.83).

* The Wirta Watch: "Biggs" to Witness 1,000th Men's Game Saturday
This Saturday, Feb. 18, Mike "Biggs" Wirta, George Fox's statistical guru, will make a bit of viewing history unmatched by few others in college cage history - he will see his 1,000th men's basketball game when the Bruins host the Willamette Bearcats in the season finale. Entering this weekend, Wirta has attended and kept statistics at 998 games (49.3% of all 2,026 GFU games ever played in the program's 102 seasons of competition). He has a string of 586 straight games going, home and road, and has worked 427 in a row at home, not missing a home game since 1972 when he was in military service. "Biggs", a member of the GFU Sports Hall of Fame, also serves on the Hall of Fame Committee as its resident historian, calls statistics for the women's games as well, and keeps the Bruins' baseball scorebook. The team will honor him for his loyal support and hard work during the men's game Saturday night.
