3/16 - ALL-REGION: Bruins' Schmick Earns Second Team All-West Region Honors

Complete All-Region Teams

NEWBERG, Ore. - Capping an outstanding senior season, shooting guard Aaron Schmick of George Fox University has been named to the 2005-06 D3hoops.com NCAA Division III All-West Region Second Team for men's basketball as chosen by the region's sports information directors via the D3hoops.com web site.

Schmick, a senior from Hillsboro, Ore., earned First Team All-Northwest Conference honors for the second year in a row while leading the Bruins to a 16-9 overall record and a 4th-place finish in the conference at 9-7. He led the team in scoring with 17.6 points per game, ranking 5th in the league, and was 6th in the NWC in assists (3.32), 8th in three-point field goals (2.32), and 10th in three-point percentage (.408).

It was at the free throw line that the 5-11 sparkplug sparkled. His league-leading .888 free throw percentage was 16th nationally, and his 16-16 game from the free throw line at Linfield was the third-highest perfect mark in the country this season. He set a new GFU record for best free throw percentage in a game and tied the record for most free throws made in a game with 16, also reached by Bruin All-American and NBA draftee Kenny Stone. At one point, he connected on 48 straight free throws, the second-longest streak ever for a Bruin and only 11 short of the NCAA Division III record in one season.

Schmick ended his career 7th on the all-time GFU scoring list with 1,470 points and 4th in career free throw percentage (.837, 345-412). He also had 288 assists and 100 steals.

This is the fifth year for D3hoops.com to select All-Region teams. A total of 599 players were nominated nationwide by the sports information directors at the various schools. The ballot was then made available to SIDs, who voted for 10 players in their region, six frontcourt players and four backcourt players.

"We are thankful to the sports information directors across Division III who took the time to nominate and vote to provide broader recognition to these worthy student-athletes," said D3hoops.com publisher Pat Coleman. "Their continued help and participation is integral to the All-Region team and everything else we do."
