COMING UP: Homecoming Weekend as Bruins Shoot for 4th in NWC

The Bruins close out the season with two games on Homecoming weekend, and a sweep of both would guarantee them sole possession of 4th place in the standings after being picked to finish 7th in the pre-season. At least one win assures the Bruins of their 3rd straight winning season. Saturday's game vs. Lewis & Clark is also a chance to play "spoiler", as the Pioneers are a half-game behind Whitworth for 1st place.

COACH MARK SUNDQUIST

Mark Sundquist (Seattle Pacific '89) is 73-99 (.424) to date in his 7th season as a college head coach, all at George Fox. He was the NWC Coach of the Year in 2004-05 for leading the Bruins to an 18-7 record and 2nd place in the conference. He coached the boys' programs at Woodburn (Ore.) * Satern BAA Athlete of the Week, HM for NWC Player Honors

Brent Satern has been named Bruin Athletic Association Men's Athlete of the Week and received honorable mention for Northwest Conference Men's Player of the Week for Feb. 5-11 as the Bruins went 1-1. In an 84-79 loss at Willamette Friday, he scored 21 points on 7-12 field goals (3-4 on threes) and 4-7 free throws, with 3 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal. In a 68-59 win over Pacific Saturday, he had 12 points on 2-5 field goals (2-4 on threes) and 6-9 free throws, with 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. For the week, he scored 33 points (16.5 ppg) on 9-17 (.529) field goals, including 5-8 (.625) on threes, and 10-16 (.625) free throws, with 6 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals. A three-time winner of the BAA award, he is 2nd in the NWC in steals (1.96), 5th in assists (5.09), 8th in assist/turnover ratio (1.27:1), and 12th in scoring (14.0) and 3-pt pct. (.375).

Two special events will take place at halftime of the George Fox men's basketball games this weekend as a part of Homecoming celebrations. On Friday, at the break in the game with Pacific Lutheran, the GFU Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2007 will be recognized. This year's inductees include track and field All-Americans Ryan Chaney and Aaron Young, multi-sport women's star Marj Brood, men's basketball coach Mark Vernon, former president Ed Stevens for meritorious service, and the 1989-90 men's basketball team. On Saturday, at halftime of the game with Lewis & Clark, the 2007 Homecoming Court will be presented.

Mike "Biggs" Wirta, George Fox's statistical guru who saw his 1,000th Bruin men's basketball game on the final day of last season vs. Willamette on Feb. 18, stretched his streak of consecutive GFU men's basketball games seen to 611 with two games this past week. He has now seen 1,023 GFU men's games (49.9% of all 2,051 games in the team's 103 seasons of competition). He has worked 436 in a row at home, not missing a home game since 1972 when he was in military service.
