11/18 - GEORGE FOX 85, HOLY NAMES 65: Bruins Balanced and Efficient in Harassing Hawks
NEWBERG, Ore. - With all five starters scoring in double figures and shooting over 50% from the field, the George Fox University Bruiins were both balanced and blazing in dispatching the Holy Names University Hawks 85-65 in a non-conference men's basketball game Saturday night here at the Wheeler Sports Center's Miller Gym.
It was the Hawks, ranked 9th in the NAIA Division II pre-season national poll, who took flight early, jumping out to a 9-4 lead five minutes into the game before the Bruins got untracked. Phil Heu-Weller sank all three free throws after being fouled on a three-point try to give the Bruins the lead for good 19-17 with 5:41 left in the period, and with Heu-Weller scoring 14 first-half points and Chris Parker 13, the Bruins extended the lead with a 16-7 run to end the period. Dan Lingenfelder's three-pointer with 32 seconds left gave the Bruins an 11-point lead, 35-24, at the break.
The Bruins stayed comfortably ahead by double digits throughout the second half by torching the twine to the tune of 73.7%, draining 14 of 19 field goal tries, and finished with a mark of 62.5% (25-40) for the game. Holy Names shot only 36.4% (24-66) from the floor. The Bruins also benefited from a decided edge in free throws as the Hawks fouled often late in the game in a vain effort to catch up. With the Hawks committing 27 fouls to 14 for the Bruins, the home team made 31-40 free throws to 8-15 for the visitors from Oakland, Calif.
Heu-Weller led all scorers with 23 points, including 12-15 from the line. Parker picked up his first career double-double by adding 18 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Brent Satern added 15 points, Brady Strutz had 13 and eight assists, and Taylor Martin chipped in with a career-high 10 points.
For the Hawks, Troy Cotton had 16 points and Luke Williams 10, both off the bench. Josh Dozier had six rebounds, and Julius Cumlat passed out seven assists.
George Fox (2-0) will spend the Thanksgiving holidays in Hawaii, playing Thursday and Friday in the US Bank-Whitworth College Invitational at Kamehameha High School-Maui campus in Pukulani. The Bruins take on Concordia University-Irvine Thursday at 2:30 p.m. (Pacific time) and Alvernia College Friday at 5 p.m. Holy Names (2-5) hosts Fresno Pacific University Friday at 8 p.m.
