2/25/2008 - GFU INVITATIONAL I: Boxers Build on Day One Lead to Win GFU Invitational

MEDFORD, Ore. - After taking a 16-stroke lead on the first day, the Pacific University Boxers continued to build upon that lead on the second day and won the George Fox University Invitational I men's golf tournament going away by 32 shots with a two-day score of 629 Monday here at the Centennial Golf Course.

Pacific's score of 314-315=629 was well ahead of runner-up Willamette University, which shot a 330-331=661. Host George Fox had the biggest improvement on the second day, gaining 17 strokes, but still placed third with a 367-350=717. Northwest Christian College had only two players competing as individuals and thus no team score.

Medalist honors went to Max Bonk of Pacific, who was two strokes better than teammate Taryn Braseth, with whom he shared the lead after the first day. Bonk finished with a 75-78=153, while Braseth carded a 75-80=155. Third place went to Shane Adversalo of Willamette with a 79-77=156, Jason Nishakawa of Pacific took fourth with an 82-77=159, and Justin Ahrans of Northwest Christian came in fifth with an 80-80=160.

George Fox was led by David Burkhart, who tied for 14th with a 92-82=175. Other Bruin scores included an 87-91=178 by Kelton Johnson, an 89-96=185 by Ben Ulrich, a 98-88=186 by Brett Tharp, a 101-89=190 by Matt Simpson, and a 104-93=197 by Daniel Grierson.

Next up for the Bruins is the Pacific Invitational Sunday-Monday, March 9-10. Sunday's round will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the Meriwether National Golf Course in Hillsboro, Ore., while Monday's round is set for 8:00 a.m. at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course in North Plains, Ore.
