9/6 - George Fox Men's and Women's Golf Teams Help Young Golfers
NEWBERG, Ore. - As a part of George Fox University's ninth annual all-campus Serve Day on Wednesday, the school's men's and women's golf teams and coaches participated in a unique way at The Children's Course, a non-profit golf course located in Gladstone, Ore.
During the morning, the teams painted one of the course's storage sheds, pressure washed and cleaned the learning center, trimmed fence lines, and seeded the tee boxes of the nine-hole, par-three course. In the afternoon, golf team members worked with kids from the Christie School, encouraging them in their games.
The Children's Course is geared toward teaching life skills and values to children through a golfing atmosphere; last year more than 3,200 children participated in programs at the Children's Course and over 12,000 lessons were given.
Though Serve Day is almost ten years old, George Fox's golf teams are in their infancy. The women's team is celebrating its second year in 2007-08, and this is the first year for the men's golf team.
"We were excited to take our sport and use it to serve the community this year," said Bruin women's golf Coach MaryJo McCloskey. "The Children's Course and the Christie School are both great organizations, and golf team members (along with a few athletic department members) were able to spend a day giving back to the sport they love by doing something worthwhile for the children."
Matt Beck, the Bruin men's coach, agreed, saying, "George Fox is sporting a brand new program this year, and it was a nice opportunity to bring the team together to help others as well as do a little team building at the same time."
George Fox University is a Christian university of the humanities, sciences, and professional studies ranked by U.S. News & World Report as a "Best Value" and as a top-tier western regional university. It offers bachelor's degrees in more than 40 majors, degree-completion programs for working adults, a seminary, and 12 master's and doctoral degrees. Nearly 3,200 students attend classes on the university's campus in Newberg, at its Portland, Salem, and Boise centers, and at other teaching sites in Oregon.
