9/22 - PACIFIC 5-WAY: Bruin Men Finish 5th in First-Ever Tournament for Newest GFU Program
BANKS, Ore. - They didn't win - they didn't expect to - but they played, and that was the important thing for the George Fox University men's golf team, playing their first intercollegiate match ever in the Pacific University 5-Way Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Ore.
For head coach Matt Beck and the six members of the Bruin golf team who participated, the fact that the Bruins finished fifth out of five teams and carded a team score of 375 was irrelevant to the history being made and the foundation being laid.
For the record, the best score on the Bruins' first day ever was a 39-48=87 by Kelton Johnson, which earned him a tie for 13th place. David Burkhart was close behind with a 47-42=89. Also scoring for the Bruins were Matt Simpson (46-45=91) and Sam McKenzie (51-57=108). Daniel Grierson carded a 54-55=109, and Ben Ulrich, playing the course as a non-counting score, posted a 49-52=101.
Host Pacific took team honors, edging Linfield College 312-317. Willamette University scored a 345 and Lewis & Clark College came in at 368. Medalist honors went to Taryn Braseth of Pacific with a 36-37=73.
The Bruins hit the links again quickly, playing Monday at 1:00 p.m. in the Willamette 5-Way Tournament at Illahe Hills Country Club in Salem, Ore.
