9/24 - WILLAMETTE 5-WAY: Bruins 5th Again in Second 5-Way Tournament of the Fall
SALEM, Ore. - Only two days after playing the very first golf match in their history, the George Fox University men's golf team played in their second tournament, with the same results - a fifth-place finish in the Willamette University 5-Way Tournament Monday afternoon here at the Illahe Hills Country Club.
The Bruins edged closer this time, however, finishing only two strokes behind Lewis & Clark College, a five-shot improvement. Linfield College took top honors with a four-player score of 307, followed by Pacific University with a 316, host Willamette with a 352, Lewis & Clark at 359, and George Fox at 361.
For the second match in a row, freshman Kelton Johnson paced the Bruins with a score of 45-41=86, tying for 15th in the individual standings. David Burkhart was right behind with a 43-44=87, Sam McKenzie carded a 50-43=93, and Matt Simpson and Ben Ulrich tied for the fourth and final counting score for the Bruins, Simpson with a 45-50=95 and Ulrich with a 50-45=95.
Medalist honors went to Pacific's Taryn Braseth with a 35-39=74, two strokes ahead of Linfield teammates Tyler Nelson and Nick Pagenkopf.
The Bruins will next participate in the Lewis & Clark 5-Way Tournament at the Oregon Golf Association course in West Linn, Ore., on Oct. 1. Tee time is set for 10:00 a.m.
