COMING UP: Bruins to Host Men's Event for First Time on Nov. 14
* Sun., Oct. 14, 12:00 pm - George Fox 5-Way Tournament at Chehalem Glenn Golf Course, Newberg, Ore.
The first-year men's golf team at George Fox gets to show off its beautiful home course, complete with its brand-new back nine that opened in September, when the Bruins host the GFU 5-Way Tournament at Chehalem Glenn Golf Course in Newberg on Sunday, Oct. 14. Nestled at the foot of Parrett Mountain which lies to the east, and with scenic views of Mt. Chehalem to the north, Chehalm Glenn offers some spectacular holes that have earned the three-year old course a reputation as one of the most challenging in the state.
The George Fox 5-Way is part of a series of events hosted by Northwest Conference schools for the Oregon teams which are members of the NWC: George Fox, Linfield College, Willamette University, Pacific University, and Lewis & Clark College. The four NWC teams in Washington also have their own series in the fall. All nine schools then come together for the NWC Fall Classic, with the results counting toward one-quarter of the team scores for determining the conference champion (the NWC Spring Classic counts another quarter and the NWC Championship in the spring counts for the final half).
COACH MATT BECK
Matt Beck joined the George Fox staff this summer as the first coach of the university's newest intercollegiate athletic program - men's golf. For the last four years, he served as an assistant coach with the Pacific University men's and women's golf programs, helping produce three Northwest Conference women's title teams from 2004-06. BRUIN BITS:
* Johnson Named BAA Athlete of the Week for Second Time
For the second week in a row, freshman Kelton Johnson has been named the Bruin Athletic Association Men's Athlete of the Week, earning the award for Sept. 24-30 after posting an 86 in the Willamette 5-Way Tournament on Sept. 24 at the Illahe Hills Country Club in Salem, Ore. His score of 45-41=86 led the Bruins and earned him 15th place in the event. His score was a new Bruin record, bettering the 87 he shot to lead the team in the Bruins' first-ever tournament, the Pacific 5-Way, on Sept. 22.
* 2007-08 Honors
Kelton Johnson
- Bruin Athletic Association Men's Athlete of the Week (Sept. 17-23; Sept. 24-30)
* Burkhart Leads Team for First Time with New Low Score Mark
After Kelton Johnson posted the low score for the Bruins in their first three matches, David Burkhart led the team in the fourth match and set a new scoring record in the process. Burkhart carded a 43-40=83 in the Linfield 5-Way Tournament on Oct. 3 at Michelbook Country Club in McMinnville, surpassing the previous best of 86 by Johnson in the Willamette 5-Way on Sept. 24. The Bruins' team score of 353 was also their best of the season, topping the score of 361 they posted in the Willamette 5-Way, and their third-place finish was higher than the fourth-place tie they earned in the their first tournament, the Pacific 5-Way, on Sept. 22.
