10/14 - GEORGE FOX 5-WAY: Linfield Wins First Men's Event Hosted by New Bruins
WOODBURN, Ore. - In the first intercollegiate event ever hosted by the new men's golf program at George Fox University, Linfield College took home the first-place trophy with a four-player, 18-hole score of 289 in the George Fox 5-Way Tournament Sunday afternoon here at the Oregon Golf Association Course.
Following the victorious Wildcats were the Pacific University Boxers at 307, the Willamette University Bearcats at 324, the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers at 340, and the host Bruins at 352. It was a new team low score for the Bruins, improving by one stroke over the 353 the team shot on Oct. 3 in the Linfield 5-Way.
Medalist honors went to Linfield's Tyler Nelson, who shot a 36-32=68. Following him was teammate Andrew Fitch with a 32-39=71, with Pacific's Sean Hamer taking third with a 38-36=74. Five golfers tied for fourth with 75's.
One of those who tied for fourth was David Burkhart of George Fox, who carded a 35-40=75, breaking his own Bruin low score record of 83 which he set in the Linfield 5-Way on Oct. 3. Other Bruin scores included a 45-45=90 by Kelton Johnson, a 43-48=91 by Ben Ulrich, a 45-51=96 by Matt Simpson, and a 51-45=96 by Daniel Grierson.
The George Fox 5-Way was changed to the Woodburn course because of plugging and sanding of the greens during the week at the Chehalem Glenn Golf Course in Newberg, which is the home course for the Bruin men's and women's golf teams.
The final event of the fall season for the Bruins (and for all the Northwest Conference schools) is the NWC Fall Classic on Sunday-Monday, Oct. 21-22, at the Spokane Country Club in Spokane, Wash., with Whitworth University as the host. Tee times are set for 11:30 a.m. on Sunday and 9:00 a.m. on Monday.
