10/18/2008 – NWC FALL CLASSIC: Pacific Holds Slimmest of Leads over Linfield after Day One
KENNEWICK, Wash. - By the slimmest of margins, the Pacific University Boxers lead the Linfield College Wildcats 294 to 295 after the first day of play in the Northwest Conference Men’s Golf Fall Classic which got under way Saturday here at the Canyon Lakes Golf Course.
Following the two leaders are the Whitworth University Pirates at 307, the University of Puget Sound Loggers at 308, the Willamette University Bearcats at 317, the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes at 318, the Whitman College Missionaries at 329, and the host George Fox University Bruins at 331. The Lewis & Clark College Pioneers did not have anyone entered.
Leading Pacific to its one-stroke lead was Ben Wright, who carded a tournament-pacing thee-under-par 36-33=69. He holds a one-stroke lead over Brian Barton of Whitman, who shot a 36-34=70, and is three strokes ahead of Tyler Nelson of Linfield with a 36-36=72.
For the host Bruins, David Burkhart had the top score with a 42-37=79. Other counting scores for the Bruins included a 42-40=82 by Kelton Johnson, a 42-41=83 by Mike Ulstad, and a 45-42=87 by Brett Tharp.
The Fall Classic concludes Sunday, with the first scheduled tee time at 8:00 a.m.
Results of the NWC Fall Classic count as one-quarter of the season score for determining the conference champion. Teams in the Fall Classic and the NWC Spring Classic receive one point each for each team they beat, and two points for each team they beat in April's NWC Championship event.
