2/16 - PUGET SOUND 8, GEORGE FOX 1: Bruins Open Net Season with Road Loss to Loggers
TACOMA, Wash. - Picking up their only win at No. 3 doubles, the George Fox University Bruins opened their 2007 men's tennis season with an 8-1 setback at the hands of the University of Puget Sound Loggers in a Northwest Conference match Friday afternoon here at the UPS Tennis Pavilion.
The Bruins' lone victory came when Mac Ovenell and Shawn McKenzie defeated the Loggers' Andrew Neal and Kei Sato 9-7 at No. 3 doubles. UPS took the No. 1 match 8-6, Sam McCullugh and Jamie Hosmer over Kyle Pearson and Ralf Schulz, and the No. 2 doubles 8-4, with Andrew Oates and Nick Amlund defeating Jordon Vargas and Nick Jenness.
Puget Sound then swept the singles, with Andrew Neal over Pearson 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1, Amlund over Schulz 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2, McCullugh over Ovenell 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3, Hosmer over Vargas 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, Scooter Sabala over Jenness 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5, and Dan Davydov over McKenzie 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6.
George Fox (0-1, NWC 0-1) visits Lewis & Clark College Sunday at 2 p.m. Puget Sound (1-4, NWC 1-3) hosts Pacific University Saturday at 11 a.m.
