2/18 - GEORGE FOX 5, LEWIS & CLARK 4: Vargas Wins Final Match as Bruins Edge Pios
PORTLAND, Ore. - With the score even at 4-4 and one match remaining, George Fox University's Jordon Vargas pulled off the win at No. 4 singles, giving the Bruins their first win of the season 5-4 over the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers in Northwest Conference men's tennis Sunday afternoon here at the Lewis & Clark indoor courts.
Vargas's 6-4, 6-2 win over Andrew Moller enabled the Bruins to even their overall and conference records at 1-1. It was the first match of the season for the Pioneers.
George Fox opened the match by taking two of the three doubles. Vargas and Nick Jenness defeated Moller and Peter Ray 9-7 at No. 2, and Mac Ovenell and Shawn McKenzie cruised past Tom Youmans and Andrew Davy 8-1 at No. 3. The Pios' David Lindsay and Luke Wheeler knocked off the Bruins' Kyle Pearson and Ralf Schulz 8-6 at No. 1.
Lewis & Clark took the top three singles while George Fox took the bottom three. Lindsay defeated Pearson 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, Wheeler downed Schulz 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2, and Ray edged Ovenell 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3. The Bruins captured the match with the Vargas win at No. 4, a 6-0, 6-1 win by Jenness over Youmans at No. 5, and McKenzie's 6-1, 6-0 victory over Davy.
George Fox hosts Whitman College Saturday at 2 p.m., while Lewis & Clark hosts Whitworth College Friday at 3 p.m.
