2/24- WHITWORTH 7, GEORGE FOX 2 / WHITMAN 9, GEORGE FOX 0: Bruins Drop "Home" Matches to Whits
PORTLAND, Ore. / BEAVERTON, Ore. - Forced indoors and on the road by rainy weather, the George Fox University Bruins dropped a pair of Northwest Conference men's tennis matches, falling 7-2 to the Whitworth College Pirates at the Lewis & Clark College indoor courts in Portland Saturday morning, and 9-0 to the Whitman College Missionaries at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton Saturday night.
The Bruins began the day well, taking two of the three doubles matches against Whitworth. The Pirates' Ed Anegon and Scott Donnell defeated the Bruins' Kyle Pearson and Ralf Schulz 8-3 at No. 1, but the Bruins bounced back as Jordon Vargas and Nick Jenness defeated Michael Carlson and Scott Bourne 9-8 (9-7) at No. 2, and Mac Ovenell and Shawn McKenzie beat Kellen Oetgen and Austin Abelar 8-6 at No. 3.
The singles were all Pirates, however, with Anegon over Pearson 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1, Carlson over Schulz 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2, Donnell over Vargas 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3, Bourne over Ovenell 2-6, 6-4, (10-4) at No. 4, Oetgen over Jenness 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5, and Abelar over McKenzie 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6.
In the evening, the powerful Missionaries made quick work of the match, losing only nine games in all. In doubles, Phalkun Mam and Steven Ly defeated Pearson and Schulz 8-2 at No. 1, Robbie Munday and Christoph Fuchs downed Vargas and Jenness 8-1 at No. 2, and Dan Wilson and Justin Hayashi tripped Ovenell and McKenzie 8-1 at No. 3.
In singles, it was Mam over Pearson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, Ly over Schulz 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, Munday over Vargas 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, Hayashi over Ovenell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4, Fuchs over Jenness 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2, and Wilson over Leon Rubalcava 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
George Fox is now 1-3 overall and in the conference, Whitworth is 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference, and Whitman is 8-2 overall and 7-0 in the conference. The Bruins play twice next Saturday, visiting Pacific University at 10 a.m. and Linfield College at 5 p.m. The Pirates host the University of Puget Sound Friday at 3 p.m. The Missionaries have three matches scheduled Sunday, sending their team all over the place to play at Willamette University at 10 a.m., at Linfield at 11 a.m., and Pacific at Tualatin Hills at 3 p.m.
