3/3 - GEORGE FOX 9, PACIFIC 0 / LINFIELD 9, GEORGE FOX 0: Bruins Drop Boxers, Fall to Wildcats
BEAVERTON, Ore. / McMINNVILLE, Ore. - A busy day of tennis saw the George Fox University Bruin sweep the Pacific University Boxers 9-0 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton in the morning, then get swept themselves 9-0 by the Linfield College Wildcats in McMinnville in the evening in Northwest Conference men's action Saturday.
The Bruins dropped only 12 games all match in sweeping the Boxers. Opening with doubles, George Fox got wins from Kyle Pearson and Ralf Schulz over Josh Kai-Corpuz and Zack Hackett 8-2 at No. 1, Jordon Vargas and Nick Jenness over Ryan Ford and Brett Honda 8-3 at No. 2, and Mac Ovenell and Shawn McKenzie over Alex Taimanao and Nick Forgey 8-0 at No. 3.
In singles, it was Pearson over Kai-Corpuz 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, Jenness over Ford 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, Ovenell over Hackett 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, Schulz over Honda 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, Vargas over Taimano 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, and McKenzie over Forgey 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
Against Linfield, the Bruins won games in every set but one, but were still swept by their Yamhill County rivals. In doubles, the Wildcats got wins from Wes Gabrielson and Kyle Anderson over Pearson and Schulz 8-4 at No. 1, Ian McGrath and Jon Roberts over Vargas and Jenness 8-4 at No. 2, and Nick Ruess and Cole Shelton over Ovenell and McKenzie 8-4 at No. 3.
In singles, it was McGrath over Pearson 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, Anderson over Ovenell 6-3, 1-6, (10-7) at No. 2, Gabrielson over Jenness 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, Luke Rembold over Schulz 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4, Matt Levering over Vargas 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5, and Matt Kauffman over McKenzie 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.
With the split, George Fox is now 2-4 overall and in the conference, Pacific is 0-7 overall and in the conference, and Linfield is 6-7 overall and 5-3 in the conference. In their next matches, George Fox hosts Willamette University Friday at 3 p.m., Pacific hosts Pacific Lutheran University March 17, and Linfield goes to Willamette Sunday.
