3/15 - WILLAMETTE 8, GEORGE FOX 1: Bearcats Bounce Bruins in Makeup of Rained-Out Match
NEWBERG, Ore. - Making up a contest that had been rained out six days earlier, the Willamette University Bearcats posted an 8-1 victory over the George Fox University Bruins in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match Thursday afternoon here at the GFU campus courts.
The Bearcats opened the match with a sweep of the doubles as Shaun Mihalick and Eric MacMillan downed the Bruins' Kyle Pearson and Ralf Schulz 8-4 at #1, Donovan LeDoux and Ethan Heinrich defeated Jordon Vargas and Nick Jenness 8-6 at #2, and Micah Mack and Geoff Klein dropped Mac Ovenell and Shawn McKenzie 8-2 at #3.
In singles, the Bruins' only win of the match came at #5, where Vargas pulled out a dramatic 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, (10-8) decision over Heinrich. Willamette took the rest of the singles, with LeDoux over Pearson 6-4, 3-6, (10-6) at #1, MacMillan over Ovenell 6-1, 6-1 at #2, Fitz Paccione over Jenness 6-1, 6-1 at #3, Mihalick over Schulz 7-5, 6-3 at #4, and Mack over Leon Rubalcava 6-1, 6-4 at #6.
George Fox (2-6, NWC 2-6) plays twice Saturday, hosting Treasure Valley Community College at 10 a.m. and the University of Puget Sound at 2:30 p.m. The TVCC match will not count on the Bruins' record. The Puget Sound match was originally scheduled for Friday but has been pushed back a day. Willamette (4-7, NWC 4-6) also plays Saturday, hosting Linfield College at 10 a.m.
