NEWBERG, Ore. - Splitting a pair of home men's tennis matches, the George Fox University Bruins defeated the Treasure Valley Community College Chukars 8-1 in the morning but lost a Northwest Conference match to the University of Puget Sound 6-3 in the afternoon here Saturday at the GFU campus courts.

Against Treasure Valley, the Bruins won the first two on the court and gained the third by default, as the Chukars have only five players on the roster. Gaining the wins were Jordon Vargas and Mac Ovenell over Esteban Ferrero and Charlie Nuuvali 8-2 at #1, and Shawn McKenzie and Ralf Schulz over Jesse Chaney and Robert Byars 9-8 at #2.

In singles, Ferrero got the only win for the Chukars at #1 when he defeated the Bruins' Ovenell 6-0, 6-0. GFU wins came from Nick Jenness over Chaney 6-2, 6-1 at #2, Vargas voer Nuuvali 6-2, 6-1 at #3, McKenzie over Byars 6-2, 6-0 at #4, and Leon Rubalcava over Kyle Nielsen 6-2, 6-0 at #5. The #6 singles was defaulted to the Bruins.

Against Puget Sound in the conference match, the Bruins had several leads slip away. The home team got off to a good start by taking two of the three doubles matches, including a win by Ovenell and Vargas over Nick Amland and Zac Peeler 8-3 at #2, and by Schulz and McKenzie over Sam McCullugh and Carl Larson 8-5 at #3. UPS took the #1 doubles as Andrew Neal and Kei Sato defeated Kyle Pearson and Jenness 8-5.

Pearson picked up the Bruins' only singles win at #1 when he knocked off Neal 6-3, 6-4, but the Loggers rallied to win the remaining five matches. Amland downed Ovenell 7-5, 7-5 at #2, Sato overcame Jenness 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 at #3, McCullugh took out Schulz 6-3, 6-3 at #4, Peeler knocked off Vargas 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 at #5, and Dan Davydov defeated McKenzie 4-6, 6-3, (10-1) at #6.

The Treasure Valley match did not count on George Fox's record; it was the first match of the season for TVCC. The Puget Sound match made the Bruins' record 2-7 overall and 2-7 in the conference, while the Loggers improved to 6-7 overall and 6-6 in the NWC.
