3/30 - WHITMAN 9, GEORGE FOX 0: Record-Tying Mam Leads No. 15 Missionaries Past Bruins

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Senior Phalkum Mam tied the Whitman College record for career victories with 149, leading the 15th-ranked Missionaries to a 9-0 win over the George Fox University Bruins in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match Friday afternoon here at the Whitman outdoor courts.

Mam, ranked 4th nationally in NCAA Division III singles, defeated the Bruins' Kyle Pearson 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and teamed up with Steven Ly at No. 1 doubles for an 8-0 win over Pearson and Nick Jenness. Mam's two wins tied him with Tim Mullin (1999-2002) for the most wins in Whitman history.

In the other doubles matches, Robbie Munday and Christoph Fuchs defeated Mac Ovenell and Jordon Vargas 8-3 at No. 2, and Matt Solomon and Justin Hayashi downed Ralf Schulz and Shawn McKenzie 8-3 at No. 3.

After Mam, other Whitman singles wins were Ly over Ovenell 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2, Munday over Jenness 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3, Solomon over Schulz 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4, Fuchs over Vargas 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, and Dan Wilson over McKenzie 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

George Fox (3-8, NWC 3-8) visits Whitworth College Saturday at 11 a.m. Whitman (19-4, NWC 13-0) will play two matches Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., splitting its large roster and sending one group to Whitworth while the other stays home to host Lewis & Clark College.
