3/31 - WHITWORTH 8, GEORGE FOX 1: Pirates Supplant Bruins in 6th NWC Playoff Spot
SPOKANE, Wash. - In a battle for the sixth and final spot in the Northwest Conference men's tennis tournament coming up in late April, the Whitworth College Pirates moved ahead of the George Fox University Bruins with an 8-1 victory Saturday here at the Whitworth outdoor courts.
The Bruins had held the sixth spot in the league standings, but were supplanted by the Pirates when the home team captured all three doubles and the top five singles. Doubles wins went to the Pirates' Ed Anegon and Scott Bourne over the Bruins' Kyle Pearson and Nick Jenness 8-4 at No. 1, Michael Carlson and Kellen Oetgen over Mac Ovenell and Jordon Vargas 8-0 at No. 2, and Scott Donnell and Colin Storm over Ralf Schulz and Shawn McKenzie 8-4 at No. 3.
The Bruins' only singles win went to Leon Rubalcava, who picked up his first college win when he defeated Storm 5-7, 6-4, (10-5) at No. 6. The Pirates got wins by Anegon over Pearson 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1, Donnell over Ovenell 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2, Carlson over Jenness 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, Bourne over Schulz 7-5, 6-1 at No. 4, and Oetgen over Vargas 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5.
George Fox (3-9, NWC 3-9) hosts Linfield College Friday at 3:30 p.m. Whitworth (3-11, NWC 3-6) hosted Whitman College later Saturday afternoon.
