4/6 - LINFIELD 9, GEORGE FOX 0: Bruins Battle Wildcats Gamely but Come Up Short
NEWBERG, Ore. - Despite playing one of their most competitive matches of the season, the George Fox University Bruins were unable to break through against a talented group of Linfield College Wildcats and dropped a 9-0 Northwest Conference men's tennis match Friday afternoon here at the GFU campus courts.
The visiting Wildcats opened by taking the doubles matches as Ian McGrath and Jon Roberts defeated the Bruins' Kyle Pearson and Nick Jenness 8-5 at No. 1, Wes Gabrielson and Kyle Anderson knocked off Mac Ovenell and Jordon Vargas 8-3 at No. 2, and Nick Ruess and Cole Shelton overpowered Shawn McKenzie and Leon Rubalcava 8-3 at No. 3.
In singles, McGrath edged Pearson 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1, Gabrielson downed Ovenell 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2, Shelton defeated Jenness 6-0, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 3, Jed Rembold conquered Vargas 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, Rich Minice nipped McKenzie 7-5, 1-6, (10-5), and Luke Rembold dropped Rubalcava 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6.
George Fox (3-10, NWC 3-10) next hosts Pacific University Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Linfield (11-10, NWC 10-3) is off until next Saturday, Apr. 14, when the Wildcats will host Pacific Lutheran University before going to Lewis & Clark College later in the day.
