4/10 - GEORGE FOX 9, PACIFIC 0: Bruins Complete Season Sweep of Short-Handed Boxers
NEWBERG, Ore. - Winning all five singles matches that were played in straight sets, plus two doubles and two matches that were defaulted due to a lack of opponents, the George Fox University Bruins defeated the short-handed Pacific University Boxers 9-0 in Northwest Conference men's tennis Tuesday afternoon here at the GFU campus courts.
The match was a make-up of a rainout on April 6. The win enabled the Bruins to complete a season sweep of the Boxers, George Fox having beaten Pacific 9-0 in their first meeting on March 3 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, Ore.
In the doubles matches, the Bruins' Kyle Pearson and Nick Jenness defeated the Boxers' Josh Kai-Corpuz and Ryan Ford 8-5 at No. 1, and Mac Ovenell and Jordon Vargas defeated Brett Honda and Nick Forgy 8-0 at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles was defaulted to the Bruins.
In singles, it was Pearson over Kai-Corpuz 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, Jenness over Ford 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2, Vargas over Honda 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, Shawn McKenzie over Forgy 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4, and Leon Rubalcava over Alex Taimana 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. The No. 6 singles was defaulted to the Bruins.
George Fox (4-10, NWC 4-10) hosts Willamette University Friday at 3 p.m. Pacific (0-13, NWC 0-13) plays two road matches Saturday, visiting Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., at 8 a.m. before driving up to Spokane to take on Whitworth College at 3 p.m.
