4/13 - WILLAMETTE 9, GEORGE FOX 0: Bruins Fall to Bearcats in Last Road Match
SALEM, Ore. - Still in the running for the sixth and final playoff spot in next weekend's Northwest Conference men's tennis tournament in Yakima, Wash., the George Fox University Bruins saw their chances for getting in take a serious blow as they dropped a 9-0 decision to the Willamette University Bearcats Friday afternoon here at the WU courts.
The Bearcats started strong in the doubles matches as Eric McMillan and Shaun Mihalick defeated the Bruins' Kyle Pearson and Nick Jenness 8-1 at No. 1, Micha Mack and Geoff Klein downed Mac Ovenell and Jordon Vargas 8-5 at No. 2, and Fitz Paccione and Luke Lagattuta overpowerd Shawn McKenzie and Leon Rubalcava 8-2 at No. 3.
In singles, the Bearcats got wins by Donovan LeDoux over Pearson 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1, MacMillan over Ovenell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, Paccione over Jenness 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3, Mihalick over Vargas 6-1, 2-6, (10-2) at No. 4, Mack over McKenzie 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5, and Lagattuta over Rubalcava 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.
George Fox (4-11, NWC 4-11) needs to win its final match, Saturday at 3 p.m. at home vs. No. 2 Pacific Lutheran University, and have No. 6 Whitworth College drop its final two matches if the Bruins are to make it to the tournament. Whitworth holds the tiebreaker over George Fox since the Pirates swept the Bruins this season. Willamette (9-8, NWC 8-6), which is 4th in the league, plays Saturday at 12 noon at home against the University of Puget Sound.
