4/14 - PACIFIC LUTHERAN 8, GEORGE FOX 1: Bruins Lose to Lutes in Season Finale
NEWBERG, Ore. - An 8-1 loss to the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes Saturday afternoon here at the GFU campus courts closed out the regular season for the George Fox University men's tennis team and eliminated the Bruins from playing in the six-team Northwest Conference Tennis Tournament next weekend in Yakima, Wash.
The Bruins picked up their only win of the match at No. 2 doubles as Jordon Vargas and Mac Ovenell teamed up for an 8-5 win over the Lutes' Justin Peterson and Jeff Loranger. The Lutes took the No. 1 doubles with David Miller and Justin Larimore defeating Kyle Pearson and Nick Jenness 8-3, and the No. 3 doubles with Jared Vidano and Kevin Floyd downing Shawn McKenzie and Leon Rubalcava 8-2.
The Lutes swept each of the singles in straight sets. Miller defeated Pearson 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1, Peterson topped Ovenell 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2, Jamie Crosetto conquered Jenness 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, Vidano knocked off Vargas 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4, John DeMars downed McKenzie 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5, and Tyler Ochsner dropped Rubalcava 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.
George Fox finishes the season with a 4-12 overall record and in 7th place in the conference with a 4-12 league mark. The Bruins could have made the conference tournament with a win over the Lutes and two losses by Whitworth College in their final two matches. Pacific Lutheran, the No. 2 team in the NWC, is 14-9 overall and 14-2 in the conference. The Lutes also are through with the regular season schedule.
