ATHERTON, Calif. - Playing perhaps their best ball of the young season, the George Fox University Bruins pushed the Menlo College Lady Oaks to the limit before falling twice, 8-6 and 4-3, in a non-conference, non-tournament softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon here at Wunderlich Field.
The Bruins had gone 0-3 the first two days of the Priscilla Benham Tournament Friday and Saturday in Livermore, Calif., but took time out from the tournament to play two at Menlo. They will play two more tournament games Monday, but with other tourney games going on Sunday, who they would play and when was still up in the air at press time.
In the first game Sunday, the Bruins fell behind 6-2 after two innings but battled back within a run at 7-6 after three-and-a-half frames. Menlo added an insurance run in the 6th.
The Bruins collected 13 hits in the game, with Ashley Peterson going 3-4 with her first college home run and three RBI. Camille Jeffris and Haley Harnish-Stadden also had two hits each for the Bruins, with Harnish-Stadden driving in two runs as well. The Lady Oaks had 15 hits, with Megan Finney going 3-4 with a triple and a home run.
Natalie White went the distance on the mound for the Bruins, fanning one and walking three. Pamela Marchese picked up the win for Menlo, striking out two and walking two in seven innings.
George Fox jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning of the nightcap before Menlo rallied with four in the home half of the 4th. The Bruins cut the margin to 4-3 with a run in the 6th but could not push across one more to tie it.
Peterson and Jeffris got two hits apiece, with Jeffris doubling and driving in all three Bruin runs. Megan Clow had two hits and a home run with two RBI for Menlo, and Megan Pacchetti also homered.
Torey Weatherman worked 4.1 innings, allowing five hits and all four Menlo runs to take the loss. She fanned one and walked three. Marchese went the distance again for the Lady Oaks, with seven hits allowed, four strikeouts, and a pair of walks.
Georg Fox is now 0-4-1 on the season, while Menlo is 6-3. After the tournament, the Bruins return home to begin Northwest Conference play on Friday, March 1, hosting Pacific Lutheran University for two at 1:00 p.m.
