Box Score Game 1
Box Score Game 2
NEWBERG, Ore. - Propelled by five home runs, including three grand slams, the Whitworth University Pirates hung a "baker's dozen" on the George Fox University Bruins twice in sweeping a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader 13-3 and 13-0 Sunday afternoon here at Morse Field.
The day's action was precipitation-challenged as each game featured one rain delay, and the second game was finally called in the bottom of the 7th after a hailstorm.
Halley Cey led off the first game for the Pirates with a home run, but the Bruins took the lead back in the 2nd. Shelby Briske scored the tying run from second on a throwing error by shortstop Lacey Parry, and Erin Lee singled in Amber Philliber.
The Pirates responded with an eight-run 3rd to take charge. Cey doubled in the tying run, Parry put the Pirates ahead with a two-run double, Lacey Kerr singled in another, and Amber Fowler capped the outburst with the first grand slam of the day. The visitors added four more in the 4th, Parry igniting the inning with a leadoff home run. George Fox got one run back in the 5th on singles by Camille Jeffris and Torey Weatherman and an RBI double by Ashley Olson, but the game was halted after that frame by the eight-run rule.
Cey, Parry, Morgan Thomsen and Fowler had two hits apiece in the Pirates' 14-hit attack. Jessie LaPlante (3-5) went the distance for Whitworth, scattering six hits with six strikeouts while walking one and allowing only one earned run. Weatherman (0-8) took the loss for the Bruins, fanning eight but walking four.
The nightcap was tight until the 7th. Whitworth got one in the 1st when Parry singled, stole second, and scored on Kerr's single, and another in the 4th on a double by Thomsen, a single by Caty Lieseke, and a sacrifice fly by Fowler. Parry's grand slam ignited an 11-run explosion in the 7th, Lieseke doubled in two, Mandee Edwards hit the second grand slam of the inning, and McKenzie Stuby singled in the final run.
Jessica Mangis (1-2) went the distance for the Pirates, fanning six while walking four and not allowing a hit until Olson singled to start the bottom of the 7th. Moments later, the hail fell, canceling the rest of the game.
Natalie White (0-8) went six-plus innings for the Bruins, surrendering 14 hits and seven runs, and Weatherman got the final three outs, allowing five hits and six runs. Cey had four hits to lead a 19-hit Whitworth assault, Kerr and Lieseke had three each, and Parry added two.
George Fox (0-16-1, NWC 0-10) and Whitworth (4-10, NWC 3-7) conclude their four-game series Sunday at 12:00 noon with another twinbill.
