4/12/2008 - PACIFIC 10-11, GEORGE FOX 1-1: Boxers Stay in NWC Chase with Two Wins over Bruins

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Keeping pace with league-leading Linfield College, the Pacific University Boxers made quick work of the George Fox University Bruins with a pair of five-inning wins, 10-1 and 11-1, in a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon here at Sherman/Larkins Stadium.
Pacific improved its record to 25-3 overall and remained in the second in the NWC at 14-2, a game-and-a-half behind Linfield, which improved to 17-1 in the conference after sweeping Pacific Lutheran University. George Fox dropped to 3-25-1 overall and 3-19 in the NWC.
In the opener, the Boxers capitalized on five Bruin errors to score 10 unearned runs, notching two runs in the 1st, three in the 2nd, and five in the 3rd. Stephanie Vanoudenhaegen, Brooke Fogwell, Brooke Toy, and Kim Whittaker had two hits each for the Boxers, with Fogwell driving in four runs and Kristen Croxford three.
The Bruins’ only run came in the 2nd on their only hit of the game, a solo home run by Ashley Olson, her first of the year.
Miranda McNealy (14-1) went the distance for the Boxers, walking one to go along with 12 strikeouts. Natalie White (2-15) took the loss for George Fox, allowing 10 unearned runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
In the second game, Toy went 3-for-3 and scored three runs and Jessie Garcia smashed a three-run homer, capping a five-run 3rd that extended a 1-0 Pacific lead. The Boxers added another five-spot in the 4th. Fogwell, Carrie Maerz, Garcia, and Heather Ritenour each chipped into the 13-hit attack with two hits apiece, Fogwell’s both doubles.
George Fox’s lone run of the game again came via the long ball as Shelby Briske stroked her team-leading third round-tripper of the season in the 4th. The Bruins’ only other hit was a single by Kristen Griffiths in the 3rd.
Andrea Bansen (11-2) worked all five innings for the Boxers, with two walks and three strikeouts. Torey Weatherman (1-10) took the loss for the Bruins, allowing 11 runs, 10 earned, and two walks with three strikeouts.
The Boxers and Bruins will wrap up their four-game series Sunday with another doubleheader at 12:00 noon.
