3/15/2008 - FRANK HASKINS INVITATIONAL: George Fox Women, Linfield Men Take Haskins Titles

NEWBERG, Ore. - Host George Fox University ran away with the women's title and Linfield College's men took their division by a comfortable margin as well in the Frank Haskins Invitational Track and Field Meet held Saturday here at Colcord Memorial Field.

The George Fox women scored 189.50 points in the 18 scored events, well ahead of runner-up Linfield's 128. Lewis & Clark College finished third with 127 points, followed by the University of Puget Sound with 74, Southwestern Oregon Community College with 64.50, Warner Pacific College with 45, and Pacific University with 44.

In the men's division, Linfield scored 143 points in 18 events, with host George Fox next with 114. Puget Sound came in third with 112.50 points, followed by Pacific with 93, Southwestern Oregon with 84, Warner Pacific with 58.50, Lewis & Clark with 53, and the Club Northwest track club and Central Washington University with 14 each.

Leading the Bruins to first in the women's division were double-winners Mollie Honan, JulieKay Brown, and Irene Johnson. Honan won the 400 meter hurdles in 1:07.57, then ran the second leg for the winning 4x100 meter relay team which posted a time of 49.40. Brown took the 400 meter dash in 59.87 and started the George Fox 'B' team on the way to victory in the 4x400 meter relay in a time of 4:09.31. Johnson ran the third leg for the 4x100 and the second leg on the 4x40 team. The only other double-winner among the women was Brittany Hodgson of Puget Sound, who captured the 1500 meter run in 4:46.50 and the 5000 meter run in 17:58.10.

Honan and Johnson were joined on the 4x100 team by Elisha Kampfe and Melissa Leighty, while Rachel-Giffey Brohaugh and Lisa Mensonides ran with Brown and Johnson on the 4x400. Other Bruin winners were Katie Alaimo in the high jump at 5-1.75/1.57m, Sierra Whitehill in the triple jump at 34-0.75/10.38m, and Marlee Zakrevsky in the hammer at 110-9/33.76m.

Pacing Linfield to its men's crown was two-time winner Shawn Fisher, who won the 800 meter run in 1:55.88 and ran the third leg of the 4x400 meter relay team which took first in 3:22.62. Other double winners included Ernest Rickett of Southwestern Oregon, who won the 200 meter dash in 22.47 and the 400 meter dash in 50.79, and Carson Bartlett of Pacific, who took the high jump with a height of 6-6.0/1.98m and the log jump with a distance of 21-11.50/6.69m.

Headlining the George Fox winners was Joel Krebs, last year's NCAA Division III national champion in the javelin, who won in his first event of the season with a throw of 186-1/56.72m. Other Bruins who placed first included Ryan MacKenzie in the 400 meter hurdles in 58.19, Sam McKenzie in the triple jump with a 42-5.5/12.94m, and the 4x100 meter relay team of Chris Fritz, Ryan Forbes, Garrett Blizzard, and Dakari Kongela in 42.98.

The next competition for the Bruins is the Point Loma Multi-Events in San Diego, Calif., at Point Loma Nazarene University on Thursday-Friday, Mar. 20-21, starting at 9:30 a.m. each morning. The Bruins will compete in several other competitions as they travel through the Golden State during the George Fox spring break Mar. 22-30.
