3/26/2008 - WESTMONT RETRO: Bruins Split with Warriors in Rare Dual Meet

Westmont Retro Results (M&W)

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Dual meets are rare these days in collegiate track and field, but the George Fox University Bruins hooked up for a historic one with the Westmont College Warriors, winning the women's division while the Warriors won the men's division, in the Westmont Retro Dual Meet here Wednesday afternoon.

The dual meet was the first one held on Westmont's 440-yard, crushed brick-and-clay course in five years, and it is the last one that will ever be held. Construction on a new all-weather track for the Warriors with a grass infield for soccer is scheduled to begin this coming fall.

George Fox's women collected 90.5 points to 75.50 for Westmont in 17 events. For the men, Westmont had 87 points to 76 for George Fox in 16 events. In keeping with the "retro" theme, all events were hand-timed and measured in English instead of metric, though conversions were included on the final report.

Event winners for the Bruin women included Melissa Leighty in the 100 yard dash (12.2), Irene Johnson in the 220 yard dash (27.9), Anja Harder in the 440 yard run (1:05.2), Lisa Mensonides in the 880 yard run (2:27.7), the 4x440 yard relay team (4:02.2), the 880 sprint medley team (1:58.4), Katie Alaimo in the high jump (5-4/1.62m), Connie Steiner in the pole vault (9-1/2.76m) and the javelin (109-8/33.42m), Elisha Kampfe in the triple jump (31-10.5/9. 71m), and Marlee Zakrevsky in the hammer (113-10/34.69m).

Bruin men who won events included the 4x440 yard relay team (4:02.2), Ben Dillow in the high jump (6-2/1.87m) and the discus (138-6/42.21m), Brian See in the pole vault (12-0/3.65m), Jake Weber in the long jump (19-10.75/6.06m), Ben Burgess in the hammer (140-6/42.82m), and David Marvin in the javelin (161-3.5/49.16m).

The Bruins conclude their California spring break trip in the Point Loma Collegiate Scoring meet Saturday, Mar. 29, at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. Events are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
