4/12/2008 – L&C INVITATIONAL: Bruins Post 17 Qualifying Marks in Final Tuneup before NWC Meet

PORTLAND, Ore. – In their final competition before the Northwest Conference Championships, the George Fox University Bruins posted 17 marks that qualified for the conference meet in the Lewis & Clark College Invitational track and field meet held here Friday and Saturday at the Eldon Fix track.


The throwing events were staged on Friday at George Fox’s Colcord Field due to the lack of a throwing area at the Lewis & Clark facility.


In the women’s division, Rachel Giffey-Brohaugh in the 400 meter dash, Terah Lack in the 100 meter hurdles, Melissa Marek-Farris in the high jump, and Sarah Curry in the pole vault each finished second in their events.  Giffey-Brohaugh ran the 400 in 59.83 to a 59.25 by Annie Hayward of Lane Community College.  Laack conquered the hurdles in 16.39, second only to a 15.67 by Jasmine Scott of Southwestern Oregon Community College.  Marek-Farris, in her first meet since basketball season ended, jumped 5-3.25/1.61 to tie Erika Schmid of Concordia University-Portland, but needed more attempts to do it.  Curry tied for second in the vault at 10-6.75/3.22m with Mallory Ramsey of the Willamette Striders track club, behind Brooke Carstensen of Linfield College at 11-0.75/3.73m.


Other top finishes for the Bruins included fifth place for Katie Alaimo in the high jump (5-1.25/1.56m) and the 4x100 meter relay team with a time of 4:27.17, and sixths by Bethany Adams in the 800 meter run (2:23.96), Connie Steiner in the pole vault (9-1/2.77m), and Laack in the javelin (109-7/33.4m).


Also meeting NWC qualifying marks were Emily Hodgin (15-11.5/4.86m) and Steiner (15-9/4.80m) in the long jump, Alaimo in the triple jump (31-10/9.70m), and Cassandra Woods in the shot put (32-5.5/9.89m).


In team scoring, the Bruins were sixth out of 13 teams with 63 points.  Concordia took top honors with 157 points, well ahead of runner-up Clackamas Community College with 80.50.


The top finishes for the Bruin men were seconds by Cam Eberhart in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 10:14.61, trailing only a 9:57.07 by Charles Cummings of Concordia, and the 4x100 meter relay team in 42.67, which was just behind the 42.61 of Clackamas.  Nate Dillow took third in the 400 meter hurdles in 58.69, and Ben Burgess was fifth in the hammer with a distance of 157-7/48.03m.  Also meeting NWC marks in the 400 hurdles were David Dillow (1:00.82) and Adam Haldorson (1:01.07).


The Bruin men took seventh out of 14 teams with 33 points.  Concordia finished first with 183.50 points to 100 for runner-up Linfield.


Coming for the Bruins are the Northwest Conference Championships, which will be hosted at George Fox's Colcord Memorial Field on Friday-Saturday, April 18-19.  Friday's events are set to begin at 2:00 p.m., with competition Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m.
