GRESHAM, Ore. – Only six George Fox University athletes participated in the Saints & Cavaliers Invitational track and field meet Saturday here at Mt. Hood Community College (it was Graduation Day at the university), but half of them posted second-place finishes with some near-misses for NCAA Division III provisional qualifying status.
In the women’s 100 meter hurdles, Melissa Leighty was second with a time of 15.47 to Bridget Johnson of Team XO with a 15.24. Leighty was .47 off the NCAA provisional time of 15.00.
Chris Fritz placed second in the men’s 100 meter dash with an 11.16, trailing Ernest Ricketts of Southwestern Oregon Community College at 11.11. Fritz was .38 away from the NCAA provisional mark of 10.78. He also came in third in the 200 meter dash at 22.38, just .63 off the NCAA mark of 21.75.
Garrett Blizzard came the closest to an NCAA mark when he finished second in the men’s 400 meter dash in 49.01, a mere .11 from the NCAA standard of 48.50. He was edged by Mat Tweedy of Clackamas Community College, who ran a 48.45.
The next event for the Bruins is the Pacific University Twilight meet on Friday, May 2, at 3:30 p.m. in Forest Grove, Ore.
