1/14 - GEORGE FOX 65, LEWIS & CLARK 51: Thomas Scores 20 to Pace Bruins by Pioneers
PORTLAND, Ore. - Kellie Thomas scored 20 points, 13 in the second half, leading the George Fox University Bruins to a 65-51 victory over the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game Tuesday night (Jan. 14) here at the Pamplin Sports Center.
Except for an early 0-2 deficit and two ties, the Bruins led throughout the contest, although the Pioneers stayed close until late in the first half. Leading 30-26 with just over two minutes left, the Bruins got six of Brittanie Strutz's eight first-half points plus a basket by Sarah Myhre for an 8-0 run to end the half and a 38-26 halftime edge.
Thomas and Kim Leith each scored a pair of goals, including a three-pointer by Leith, to start the second half as the Bruins stretched their lead to 16 at 47-31 with 15:56. The Pioneers went on a 9-0 run to cut the margin to seven at 47-40 with 10:54 to play, but Myhre broke the Bruins' scoreless spell with an underhand shot and Thomas hit a three for a 52-40 lead. The Bruins led by double digits the rest of the way in defeating the Pioneers for the 17th straight time.
In addition to Thomas's 20, Leith finished with 11 and Darby Cave added 10. Myhre had a game-high 10 rebounds as the Bruins controlled the boards 43-35. Leith and Myhre had 4 assists apiece, while on defense, the Bruins forced 22 Lewis & Clark turnovers and blocked nine shots, three by Cave.
Nnenna Lewis was the only Pioneer in double figures with 16 points, and also had a team-high nine rebounds and three blocks. Krystle Mortimore had 4 assists.
George Fox is now 8-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while Lewis & Clark fell to 6-9 overall and 1-5 in the league.
The Bruins return home to host the University of Puget Sound Friday (Jan. 17) at 6:00 p.m., while the Pioneers are off until Jan. 24, when they will host Whitman College at 6:00 p.m.
