12/27 - GEORGE FOX 71, ROWAN 62: Cave's Double-Double Lifts Bruins by Rowan in Surf 'n' Slam Opener

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Darby Cave posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, leading the George Fox University Bruins to a 71-62 win over the Rowan University Profs in the opening round of the Surf 'n' Slam Women's Basketball Tournament Friday afternoon (Dec. 27) here at Point Loma Nazarene University.

Cave hit 9-16 from the floor and led a strong showing by George Fox on the offensive boards with 5 of her 11 recoveries coming after missed Bruin shots. George Fox out-rebounded the New Jersey team 47-36, including 21 offensive rebounds, making up for a .384 shooting mark (28-73) from the floor.

Kellie Thomas chipped in with 12 points and Sarah Myhre came off the bench to also score 12 for the Bruins. Kim Leith had 4 assists and Cave picked up 3 steals as the Bruins forced the Profs into 23 turnovers.

Stephanie Finke led all scorers with 23 points for Rowan, sinking 10-12 from the field. Kami Bernardo added 13 points and Stacie Minuskin had 10. Bernardo and Kate Drumgoole had 6 rebounds each, and Jennifer Daly passed out 5 assists.

George Fox improved to 5-2 on the season, while Rowan dropped to 3-5.

In other tournament games, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater edged Montclair State University 64-63; Baldwin-Wallace College, ranked 6th in the NCAA Division III, routed Coe College 77-45; and Point Loma Nazarene drubbed St. Joseph's College of New York 109-42.

Saturday's tournament schedule will have Montclair State (5-3) vs. Coe (1-5) at 10:00 a.m., Rowan (3-5) vs. St. Joseph's (4-4) at 12:15 p.m., Wisconsin-Whitewater (5-2) vs. Baldwin-Wallace (8-1) at 2:30 p.m., and George Fox (5-2) vs. Point Loma Nazarene (8-3) at 4:45 p.m. The tournament takes a day off Sunday, then concludes on Monday.
