11/23 - SEATTLE 57, GEORGE FOX 46: First-Half Offensive Woes Cause Bruins to Drop Opener to Seattle
SEATTLE, Wash. - Although their shooting percentage from the first half to the second half improved from .167 to .565, the George Fox University Bruins were never able to fully recover from their first-half offensive woes and dropped a 57-46 decision to the Seattle University Redhawks in the women's basketball opener for both teams Saturday night (Nov. 23) here at the Archbishop Connolly Center.
The Redhawks scored the first four points of the game before Melissa Alexander got the Bruins' first two points of the season with a driving layup down the lane. The home team extended their lead, however, to 16-4 with eight minutes left in the first half, and led by as much as 16 before settling for a 24-10 lead at the break. The Bruins hit only 4-of-24 in the half.
With Sarah Myhre scoring 7 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Bruins prevented the Redhawks from extending their lead, but could never cut the deficit to less than 7 points, which they managed three times in the final four minutes. George Fox hit 13-of-23 from the field in the second half to stay in the game, but Seattle connected on 5-of-6 shots from the free-throw line in the final minute of action to seal the victory.
Myhre and Liz Clark finished with 9 points and 7 rebounds each to lead the Bruins, and Kellie Thomas added 8 points. Thomas and Kim Leith had 3 assists apiece.
Prized offseason signing Kristin Connolly, a transfer from the University of Kentucky, where she played in every game last year, made her debut for Division II Seattle and recorded a game-high 15 points with 7 rebounds. Lisa Milne added 14 points and 5 assists, and Leah Welton finished with 13 points, 11 in the first half, with a game-high 8 rebounds.
The Bruins play their home opener Tuesday (Nov. 26) against Western Baptist College at 7:00 p.m., while the Redhawks host Northwest College Tuesday, also at 7:00 p.m.
